Computer Hardware Engineer

14.09 Computer Engineering · SOC 17-2061

Computer hardware engineers design and test the physical machine — processors, boards, memory systems, embedded controllers and the peripherals around them. ⚠ It pays better than any other career on this site and it is small: about 76,800 people nationally, and a third of the occupation expects a master's degree.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠ There is no licence in the way of this work: computer hardware engineering runs almost entirely under the industry exemption, and few of these engineers hold a PE. What matters instead is ACCREDITATION and DEGREE TYPE. ⚠⚠ Computer ENGINEERING is normally accredited by ABET's ENGINEERING commission and computer SCIENCE by its COMPUTING commission — different accreditations, different degrees, and only the engineering one keeps the PE route open should you later want it (s. 471.013, Florida Statutes: four years of experience after an approved engineering curriculum, six after engineering technology). ⚠ Check the commission against the specific degree at amspub.abet.org before enrolling, because the two degrees frequently sit in the same department and sound interchangeable.

What the work actually is

O*NET: research, design, develop or test computer or computer-related equipment for commercial, industrial, military or scientific use. The task statements are specific about what that means — design and develop computer hardware and support peripherals, including central processing units, support logic, microprocessors, custom integrated circuits, and printers and disk drives; build, test and modify product prototypes using working models or theoretical models constructed with computer simulation; write detailed functional specifications that document the hardware development process; test and verify hardware to ensure that it meets specifications, by recording and analyzing test data.

⚠ Notice how much of that is specification, prototype and test rather than invention. Hardware work is slow and expensive to get wrong — a silicon respin or a board revision costs months — so the discipline puts far more weight on verification than software does, and students who enjoy the design half often underestimate the other.

Projected need

O*NET, on federal projections: 76,800 computer hardware engineers employed (2024), growth “much faster than average (7% or higher)”, with 4,700 openings a year. Median wages $161,740 (2025) — the highest of any career on this site. On education, 48% of respondents said a bachelor’s degree is required and 34% said a master’s.

⚠ That second figure is the one to plan around. This is a research-and-development occupation, and a third of it expects a graduate degree — so treat the bachelor’s as the qualifying step rather than necessarily the last one, and keep your grades in a state that leaves the option open.

⚠⚠ The choice that defines this path: computer engineering, electrical, or computer science

Three degrees lead into this work and they are not interchangeable. Computer engineering is the middle of the three and the most direct: ten Florida public institutions award it, and it takes most of its first two years from the electrical side. Electrical engineering is broader and keeps power, communications and analogue open. Computer science owns the algorithm and the operating system, not the board.

⚠ The practical test, and it is worth asking yourself honestly before year two: do you want to know what the transistor is doing? If the answer is yes, computer or electrical engineering. If what draws you is what the program is doing, computer science is the better degree and the larger job market.

⚠ The first two years of computer and electrical engineering usually match almost exactly at the same institution, so the decision is cheap in year one and expensive in year three. Ask the department which courses differ before you declare.

⚠⚠⚠ Florida numbers these courses more inconsistently than any other engineering field

The environmental path on this site carries a warning about fragmented numbering. Computing is worse, because two prefixes compete for the same subjects: the electrical engineering family (EEL, EEE) and the computing family (CDA, COP, CNT). Digital logic runs under at least four numbers across two prefixes; computer architecture under five; the introductory programming course under a dozen.

⚠ So do not try to match the numbers below against your own catalogue. Match the SUBJECT, and when you transfer send a syllabus and a topic list rather than a course number — an evaluator comparing identifiers across these families will find nothing to match.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Computer Engineering 10 Florida schools
The degree itself, at ten Florida public institutions — the same footprint as electrical engineering, so this is rarely a relocation decision. ⚠ Its first two years usually match the electrical degree almost exactly at the same school.
Electrical Engineering 10 Florida schools
⚠ The broader alternative, and the one to read beside it: same early courses, and it keeps power, communications, control and analogue open if hardware turns out not to be the part you enjoy.
Computer Science 16 Florida schools
The software side of the same boundary, and by far the larger job market: Florida public institutions award computing credentials across four separate programmes — computer science, information technology, cybersecurity and networking — against ten institutions for computer engineering. ⚠ If what draws you is what the program does rather than what the transistor does, this is the better degree.
Engineering Technology 76 Florida schools
⚠ A different route: electronics engineering technology leads to test, integration and field engineering work rather than to design, and carries the six-year experience requirement if you later pursue a PE.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (ENGINEERING) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Aerospace Engineer Aerospace, Aeronautical, and Astronautical/Space Engineering
Aerospace engineers design, analyse and test aircraft and spacecraft — aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, flight dynamics and the mission design that ties them together. ⚠ Florida is one of the few places in the world where the whole industry is present at once: launch, satellites, aviation, simulation and defence, concentrated on the Space Coast and around Orlando.
Biomedical Engineer Biomedical/Medical Engineering
Biomedical engineers apply engineering to medicine — instrumentation and imaging, biomaterials and implants, biomechanics, and the tissue and neural engineering at the research frontier. It is the fastest-growing and newest engineering discipline in Florida. ⚠⚠ It is also the one where the bachelor’s degree is least often the end of the story: only 43% of employers treat it as sufficient, and two Florida universities award the degree at graduate level ONLY. Read the projected-need section before you commit — the arithmetic is not on any programme page.
Chemical Engineer Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineers design and run the processes that turn raw materials into products at scale — reactors, separations, heat and mass transfer, and the control and safety systems around them. It is the engineering discipline built on chemistry, and the only one that requires organic chemistry. ⚠⚠ In Florida it is taught at just FOUR institutions in THREE cities, and neither UCF nor FIU awards the degree — which makes where you start your degree the most consequential decision on this page.
Civil Engineer Civil Engineering
Civil engineers design, build and maintain the built environment — bridges, buildings, roads, water and wastewater systems, ports, drainage and coastal works. ⚠ It is the engineering discipline where a Professional Engineer licence matters most: much of the work legally requires one, because civil engineers sign off on things that fail publicly.
Electrical Engineer Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering
Electrical engineers design, develop and test electrical and electronic systems — power generation and distribution, control systems, communications, embedded computing, instrumentation and the electronics inside almost everything else. In Florida the work concentrates in aerospace and space launch, defence and simulation, utilities and grid modernisation, semiconductors and medical devices.
Environmental Engineer Environmental/Environmental Health Engineering
Environmental engineers design the systems that keep water, air and land usable — drinking water and wastewater treatment, stormwater, air-pollution control, landfills and the clean-up of contaminated sites. ⚠ It is the engineering discipline most bound up with regulation: the calculation decides what is possible and the permit decides what is allowed.
Industrial Engineer Industrial Engineering
Industrial engineers design the systems that produce things — people, machines, materials, information and money working together. They lay out factories, set quality standards, schedule production, measure and improve work, and cut cost and waste out of processes. ⚠ It is the engineering discipline that most often leads into operations management, and the one least confined to manufacturing.
Materials Engineer Materials Engineering
Materials engineers work out why materials behave as they do and choose or design them to meet a requirement — metals, ceramics, polymers, composites and semiconductors — and they are who finds out why something broke. ⚠ It is the smallest engineering occupation on this site, and in Florida it is mostly a graduate degree.
Mechanical Engineer Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineers design, analyse and test things that move, carry load, or move heat and fluid — engines, machines, HVAC and energy systems, vehicles, robots, medical devices, manufacturing plant. It is the broadest of the engineering disciplines, and in Florida it feeds aerospace on the Space Coast, defence, marine, power generation, theme-park ride engineering and a large and growing manufacturing sector.

MAD2104 —Discrete Mathematics Guide
Discrete Mathematics — Boolean algebra, logic, sets and proof. ⚠ The mathematics that actually appears in digital design, and the one students are most surprised to need.
⚠ ⚠ Carried by seventeen public institutions, most of them state colleges — a good course to have finished before transferring. Some programmes meet the requirement with COT3100 Computational Structures (DSC, FAMU, FIU, UCF, UF, UNF, USF, UWF) instead.
COP3530 —Data Structures Request a guide
Data Structures — the second programming course, and the one employers assume. ⚠ Hardware engineers write more code than the job title suggests: firmware, test benches and simulation are all software.
⚠ ⚠⚠ THE FIRST PROGRAMMING COURSE IS THE MOST FRAGMENTED NUMBER IN FLORIDA COMPUTING — COP2271 (Florida Poly, UF), COP3502C (UCF, UF), COP3014 (FAU, Florida State, UWF), COP2220 (eight institutions) and more besides. This second course is the stable one, carried by eleven: DSC, Eastern Florida State, FAMU, FGCU, FIU, Florida Poly, Miami Dade, Palm Beach State, UF, UNF and UWF.
EEL3111 —Circuit Analysis I Guide
Circuit Analysis I — the first real electrical engineering course: nodes, meshes, transients and the habit of solving a network rather than memorising one.
⚠ ⚠ Six institutions use EEL3111 (FAMU, FAU, Florida Poly, Florida State, UNF, UWF); UF carries the integrated EEL3111C. Several programmes put a broader EEL3003 Introduction to Electrical Engineering (FAMU, Florida State, UF) ahead of it.

⚠ ⚠ FAMU, Florida Poly, Florida State, UF, UNF and UWF.
EEL3135 —Signals and Systems Guide
Signals and Systems — convolution, Fourier and sampling. ⚠ The bridge between the analogue world and everything digital, and the course most students find hardest.
⚠ ⚠ Seven institutions: FAMU, FIU, Florida Poly, Florida State, UF, UNF, UWF. Elsewhere it appears under departmental numbers — match the subject, not the number.
EEL3472 —Fundamentals of Electromagnetic Fields Guide
Electromagnetic Fields — transmission lines, propagation and why a fast signal on a long trace stops behaving like a wire. Signal integrity starts here.
⚠ ⚠ FAMU, FIU, Florida Poly, Florida State, UF, UNF and UWF.
EEL3701 —Introduction to Digital Systems Guide
Digital Logic and Systems — gates, state machines, timing. The foundation course of this whole path, and the one to take seriously first.
⚠ ⚠⚠ AT LEAST FOUR NUMBERS ACROSS TWO PREFIXES for this subject: EEL3701 (UNF, UWF, with a separate EEL3701L laboratory), EEL3701C (UF, integrated), CDA3201 (USF) and CDA3201C (FAU). ⚠ The EEL and CDA prefixes are the electrical and the computing families respectively — which one your institution uses usually says which department owns the computer engineering degree.
CDA4102 —Computer Architecture Request a guide
Computer Architecture — instruction sets, pipelines, caches and memory hierarchy: how the machine actually executes what the compiler emitted.
⚠ ⚠⚠ FIVE NUMBERS FOR THIS SUBJECT. CDA4102 at FAMU, FAU, UF, UNF and USF; CDA3101 at FAMU, Florida State, UF and UWF; CDA3100 at Florida Poly, Florida State, Seminole State and UNF; CDA4150 at FGCU and Florida State; CDA4101 at DSC and FIU. ⚠ Several institutions carry two of them at different levels — a first course and a second — so read the prerequisite, not the number.
EEE3308 —Microelectronics Request a guide
Microelectronics — diodes, transistors and amplifier stages: what the logic gate is made of, and why it has a speed and a power budget.
⚠ ⚠ EEE3308 at Florida Poly, UNF and UWF; the integrated EEE3308C at UF. Other programmes number it in the EEL family.
EEL4712 —Digital Design Guide
Digital Design — register-transfer design in Verilog or VHDL, synthesised onto an FPGA. ⚠ If one course on this path gets you hired, it is this one.
⚠ ⚠ EEL4712 at UNF and UWF, EEL4712C at UF. Elsewhere the material appears as an advanced digital design or embedded systems course — look for the FPGA project in the syllabus.
EEL4744 —Microprocessor Principles and Applications Guide
Microprocessor Applications — embedded programming against real peripherals: interrupts, timers, buses and the debugging that goes with them.
⚠ ⚠ A four-institution split across two forms: EEL4744 at USF and UWF, EEL4744C at UF and UNF. FIU approaches the same ground through EEL2880 C Programming for Embedded Systems.
EEE4351 —Solid State Electronic Devices Request a guide
Solid State Electronic Devices — semiconductor physics: carriers, junctions and the MOSFET. ⚠ The course that separates people who use devices from people who can design with them.
⚠ ⚠ EEE4351 at FAMU and Florida State; EEE4351C at USF. Not every programme requires it — if yours does not and device work interests you, take it as an elective.
CDA4210 —Introduction to VLSI Request a guide
Introduction to VLSI — designing at the transistor and layout level, where architecture meets silicon.
⚠ ⚠ CDA4210 at FAU and Florida Poly; EEE4310 VLSI Circuit Design at UF and UWF. Two prefixes, one subject, four institutions — and at most schools it is a graduate course, which is one reason a third of this occupation holds a master's.
CNT4504 —Computer Networks Request a guide
Computer Networks — protocols, layering and the hardware that moves packets. ⚠ Hardware engineers build the interfaces; knowing what runs over them is not optional.
⚠ ⚠ CNT4504 at FAMU, FIU, Florida Poly, Florida State, Seminole State and UNF; CNT4007 Data and Computer Communications at DSC, FAU, UF and UWF.
COP4600 —Operating Systems Request a guide
Operating Systems — the software that actually drives the hardware: scheduling, memory management, drivers and interrupts from the other side.
⚠ ⚠ COP4600 at UCF, UF and USF; most other programmes carry an operating systems course under a departmental number. Worth taking even where it is optional — it is where hardware and software meet.
EGN3613 —Principles of Engineering Economy Guide
Engineering Economic Analysis — a hardware decision is a cost decision: unit cost, tooling, volume and the price of a respin.
⚠ ⚠ DSC, FAMU, FIU, Florida State and UCF; elsewhere it is taught under a departmental number.
EEL4924C —Electrical Engineering Design 2 Request a guide
Senior Design — a real project, built and demonstrated. ⚠ In hardware this is the strongest interview material you will have; choose a project you can show working.
⚠ ⚠ Carried under this number by UF alone. Every programme has a capstone — the numbers vary widely, and at several institutions it runs over two terms.
