Early Childhood Educator

19.07 Human Development, Family Studies, and Related Services · SOC 25-2011

⚠⚠⚠ $24,540 separates a preschool teacher from a kindergarten teacher, and the children are one year apart. Preschool $38,140, kindergarten $62,680 — the difference is not the work, it is which system employs you and which credential you hold. ⚠⚠ Florida sets the minimum for a VPK lead instructor at a Child Development Associate credential, which is not a degree, and its public institutions award 1,017 child care credentials a year of which ZERO are degrees.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠⚠⚠ TWO CERTIFICATIONS, ALMOST THE SAME COURSEWORK, AND ONLY ONE REACHES THE PUBLIC-SCHOOL PAY SCALE. Florida's Department of Education issues PRESCHOOL EDUCATION (BIRTH–AGE 4) and PREKINDERGARTEN/PRIMARY EDUCATION (AGE 3–GRADE 3). Both require a bachelor's degree with 45 semester hours of specialisation covering child growth and development, historical and philosophical perspectives, developmentally appropriate curriculum, family and community involvement, health, nutrition and safety, assessment and evaluation, and special needs. ⚠⚠ The difference is the age band: one stops at age four, the other runs through GRADE THREE — which is the difference between a $38,140 preschool classroom and a $62,680 kindergarten or primary one. ⚠ Choose deliberately, because the coursework difference is small and the salary difference is not. ⚠⚠⚠ AND THE FLOOR IS MUCH LOWER THAN EITHER. Section 1002.55(3)(c)1., F.S. requires a Voluntary Prekindergarten instructor to hold at minimum a child development associate credential issued by the National Credentialing Program of the Council for Professional Recognition, or a credential the Department of Children and Families approves as equivalent or greater. ⚠ A CDA is a credential, not a degree — so Florida's state-funded prekindergarten classroom can be led by someone with no degree at all, which is exactly why 1,017 of the state's early-childhood credentials are certificates and none is a degree. ⚠ Child care staff separately need DCF introductory training and screening; the centre's DIRECTOR needs the Florida Director Credential.

⚠⚠⚠ One year of the child's age is worth $24,540

Elementary teacher25-2021$63,9701,419,300—0%bachelor's + certification

⚠⚠⚠ A preschool teacher and a kindergarten teacher are doing recognisably the same job with children a year apart, and one earns $24,540 more. The gap is not skill or difficulty. It is that kindergarten is a public school post requiring a bachelor's and state certification, and preschool mostly is not.

⚠⚠ And look at the childcare worker row, because it is the clearest labour-market signal on this site: an occupation projected to decline 2 percent that still generates 150,300 openings a year — about 15% of the entire workforce, every year, replaced. That is turnover, and it is what a $34,980 median buys.

⚠⚠⚠ Two Florida certifications, nearly identical coursework, very different destinations

⚠⚠⚠ Same degree level, same 45 hours, same content areas — and one of them stops at age four. The content lists are close to identical: child growth and development, historical and philosophical perspectives, developmentally appropriate curriculum, family and community involvement, health, nutrition and safety, assessment and evaluation, special needs.

⚠⚠ If you are going to do a bachelor's anyway, the age 3 – grade 3 certification is the one that reaches the salary schedule. This is the single most consequential choice on the page and almost nothing puts it in front of a student.

⚠⚠ The floor is a CDA, and Florida's training data proves it

Section 1002.55, F.S. sets the minimum for a Voluntary Prekindergarten lead instructor at a child development associate credential or a DCF-approved equivalent. A CDA is a credential, not a degree.

The training system has arranged itself around exactly that:

CodeFlorida public institutionsCredentialsOf which degrees
Child Care Provider/Assistant (19.0709)371,017⚠⚠⚠ zero
Child Care Management (19.0708)1333156 associate
✅ Early Childhood Education and Teaching (13.1210)31842✅ 513 bachelor's + 265 associate

⚠⚠⚠ Every one of the 1,017 credentials under the child care provider code is a certificate. 663 of twelve weeks to a year, 183 of one to two years, 130 of two to four, 41 of under twelve weeks. Not one degree.

⚠⚠ The degree route exists and is filed somewhere else entirely — under teacher education, at 31 institutions, producing 513 bachelor's a year, with FIU alone awarding 216. A student searching for “early childhood” at a state college will find the certificate world; the degree world is in the college of education.

⚠ And the two do not automatically connect. Clock-hour and certificate training is not credit, so ask in writing what articulates before assuming a child care certificate counts toward the degree.

⚠ The route that actually changes the number

  1. Start where the work is. A CDA or a Florida child care certificate gets you into a classroom, employed, quickly — 37 institutions teach it and most are technical or state colleges near home.
  2. ⚠⚠ Then go for the bachelor's in Early Childhood Education and Teaching, not another certificate. 31 Florida public institutions award it, 12 of them state colleges awarding the associate.
  3. ✅ Take the PREKINDERGARTEN/PRIMARY (age 3 – grade 3) certification, not Preschool Education, unless you are certain you want to stay with under-fives.

⚠⚠ That sequence is the difference between $38,140 and $62,680, and every step of it is available at a Florida public institution.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠⚠⚠ If you are doing a bachelor's, get the age 3 – grade 3 certification. Nearly the same 45 semester hours as Preschool Education, and it reaches the public-school salary schedule. This is the highest-value decision on this page.

⚠⚠ Treat the certificate as a beginning, not a destination. It is a genuine credential that gets you working, and 1,017 people a year in Florida earn one that contains no degree credit. Plan the degree from the start and ask what articulates.

⚠ Look at the child care management tier honestly. 13 institutions, 331 credentials, only 56 of them associate degrees — the supervisory route is barely longer than the entry one, and a Florida Director Credential is what a centre director needs. It is a real step up in responsibility and a modest one in pay.

⚠⚠ Read the turnover figure as your negotiating position. 150,300 openings a year in a declining occupation means centres are short-staffed constantly. Experienced, credentialled staff have more leverage than the pay scale suggests — ask about the centre's staff turnover and its VPK ratios at interview.

And if you love this work but not the money, the two realistic moves are the primary classroom and school-based or social service roles. Both need a degree; neither asks you to leave young children.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Child Care and Early Learning 39 Florida schools
The certificate tier — 39 Florida public institutions across the two child care codes, 1,348 credentials a year, and ⚠⚠ under the main code every one of the 1,017 is a certificate rather than a degree. It gets you employed quickly and it contains no degree credit.
Teacher Education 37 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ Where the degree and the certification live. Early Childhood Education and Teaching (CIP 13.1210) is taught at 31 Florida public institutions, producing 513 bachelor's and 265 associate degrees a year — FIU alone 216. ⚠ This is the route to the age 3 – grade 3 certification and the public-school salary schedule, and the certificate route does not automatically feed it.
Psychology 10 Florida schools
⚠ The academic discipline underneath the work — DEP2004 Human Growth and Development is carried at 29 Florida institutions. ⚠⚠ A psychology bachelor's plus the 45 semester hours of specialisation content is one route to Department of Education certification, and psychology is taught at far more institutions than early childhood education is.

Related, but not a route in

Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.

Social Work 9 Florida schools
⚠ One of the realistic ways out of the $34,980 to $38,140 band without leaving work with children: early intervention, Head Start family services and child protection all value this background. ⚠⚠ Child, family and school social workers earn $59,550 — not a fortune, but a different order from a child care certificate.
Counseling 8 Florida schools
⚠ Named for the school counselling route: staff who want to stay with children and earn considerably more move toward school-based roles, which need a master's and a Department of Education certification. ⚠⚠ Florida's school counsellor caseload is 432 students, so go in informed.

Courses along this path

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.

EEC1001 —Introduction to Early Childhood Education Request a guide
Introduction to Early Childhood Education — 9 institutions. The entry course, and available at state and technical colleges across the state.
EEC1601 —Observing and Recording Children's Behavior Request a guide
⚠ Observing and Recording Children's Behavior — 11 institutions, one of the two most widely carried early childhood courses in Florida. Observation and documentation is the professional core of the work, and its prominence in the catalogue reflects that.
EEC2401 —Home and Community Guide
Home and Community — 11 institutions. Family engagement is a named content area in both Florida certifications and a large part of the daily job.
EEC1603 —Child Guidance Request a guide
Child Guidance — 7 institutions. Behaviour guidance rather than behaviour control, which is the skill that decides whether someone lasts in this work.
EEC2734 —Health, Safety, and Nutrition Request a guide
Health, Safety and Nutrition for Young Children — 7 institutions. A named content area in both certifications, and a licensing requirement in a regulated centre.
EEC2523 —Leadership and Management of Child Care Programs Guide
⚠ Child Care Center Management — 7 institutions. The supervisory tier, and directly relevant to the Florida Director Credential a centre director must hold.

EEC4940 —Student Internship Request a guide
⚠⚠ Student Internship — 13 institutions, the most widely carried early childhood course in Florida. Upper division, so it belongs to the DEGREE route rather than the certificate one — and it is the supervised practice the state certification requires.
⚠ ⚠ Placement means Florida Level 2 background screening. Start it the term before, not when the placement office asks.
EEC4211 —Integrated Math and Science in Early Childhood Request a guide
Integrated Mathematics and Science — 9 institutions. Upper division, and squarely aimed at the age 3 – grade 3 classroom rather than the child care centre.
EEC4404 —Relations Across Family-School-Community Request a guide
Relations Across Family, School and Community — 7 institutions. The degree-level treatment of family engagement.
DEP2004 —Human Growth & Development Guide
⚠ Human Growth and Development — 29 institutions, far more widely carried than any EEC course. Child growth and development is the first named content area in both Florida certifications, and this is where most students actually take it.
PSY2012 —General Psychology Guide
Introduction to Psychology — 33 institutions. The general foundation, available at nearly every Florida public college.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions. Required for any degree route, and documentation is a daily professional task in a licensed centre.
MAT1033 —Intermediate Algebra Request a guide
Intermediate Algebra — the mathematics gate most Florida education degrees sit behind. ⚠ Clearing it early is what stops a certificate-holder's degree plans stalling.
⚠ ⚠ Some institutions gate the education degree on MAC1105 College Algebra instead, or on a general-education mathematics course. Ask the programme which it wants.
SYG2000 —Introduction to Sociology Guide
General Sociology — 29 institutions. Named because the families you work with are shaped by circumstances the job requires you to understand rather than judge.
