31.05 Sports, Kinesiology, and Physical Education/Fitness · SOC 39-9031
⚠⚠⚠ The entry-level education for this occupation is a HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, and it has about 68,000 openings a year — one of the largest figures on this site. What the job requires is a CERTIFICATION, not a degree. ⚠⚠ So a Florida student in a kinesiology degree needs an answer to a direct question: what is the degree for? There are three good ones — clinical exercise physiology ($59,460, +13%), graduate school in a health profession, or management — and this page is organised around them.
| Role | SOC | Entry education | Median | Jobs | Openings/yr | Outlook 2025–35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise trainer / group fitness instructor | 39-9031 | ⚠⚠ High school diploma | $47,160 | 388,400 | ⚠ 68,000 | +7% |
| Exercise physiologist | 29-1128 | Bachelor’s | $59,460 | 21,200 | 1,400 | ⚠ +13% |
⚠⚠⚠ 68,000 openings a year is one of the largest figures anywhere on this site — and the entry-level education is a high school diploma. No Florida licence exists for personal training. What the job actually requires is a certification: BLS says “personal trainers usually must be certified before they begin working with clients or with members of a gym or health club.”
So a Florida student in a kinesiology or exercise science degree needs to be able to answer a direct question: what is the degree for, given that the job at the end of it does not require one?
There are three good answers, and this page is organised around them:
⚠ If none of those three is the plan, get certified and start working. That is a legitimate answer, and four years of tuition is not a prerequisite for it.
| Percentile (exercise trainers) | Florida | United States | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10th | $27,450 | $28,800 | −$1,350 |
| ⚠ 25th | ⚠ $28,970 | $35,280 | −$6,310 |
| Median | $38,800 | $47,160 | −$8,360 |
| 75th | $52,630 | $61,730 | −$9,100 |
| 90th | $72,870 | $83,100 | −$10,230 |
⚠⚠ Read the caveat before the numbers. This is an unusually part-time occupation — 55% work in fitness centres and 15% are self-employed — so annual figures mix full-time and part-time earners and understate the hourly rate. The national median works out at $22.67 an hour.
⚠⚠⚠ Even allowing for that, the Florida 25th percentile of $28,970 is below a full-time year at the state minimum wage — which tells you plainly that a quarter of this workforce is part-time, and that the bottom of this occupation is not a living on its own. The people earning the 75th and 90th percentile figures are almost all doing one of three things: specialising, building a client book as a sole trader, or managing.
⚠ The industry table is narrow and worth knowing anyway: government $48,300, fitness and recreational sports centres $48,140, educational services $45,350, civic and social organisations $38,640.
| Code | Degree | Florida output | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| 31.0504 | ⚠ Sport and Fitness Administration/Management | 833 at 8 institutions | UF 335, Florida State 268, UNF 57, UWF 24 |
| 31.0505 | Kinesiology and Exercise Science | 711 at 6 institutions | UCF 360, FAU 188, FGCU 70, UWF 64, USF 23, FIU 5 |
| 31.0501 | Health and Physical Education/Fitness, General | 58 | UWF 36, FAMU 22 |
| ⚠ 31.0507 | Physical Fitness Technician — the directly vocational one | 27 associate degrees | Northwest Florida 15, Chipola 5, Tallahassee 4, Pensacola State 3 |
⚠⚠ The largest degree in this family is a BUSINESS degree. Sport and fitness administration is marketing, finance, facility operations, event management and law — a perfectly good degree, and not a preparation for assessing a client or running a cardiac rehabilitation session. UF and Florida State together award 603 of them a year and award no exercise science bachelor’s under 31.0505 at all.
⚠⚠⚠ So “kinesiology” at UCF and “sport management” at UF are not versions of one thing. Decide which you want and then find the institution, rather than the other way round. Read the required-course list: if it has exercise physiology, biomechanics and anatomy, it is the science degree; if it has accounting, marketing and sport law, it is the management one.
⚠ And note the fourth row. Physical Fitness Technician is a two-year degree at four state colleges that exists specifically to produce working trainers — 27 graduates a year statewide. For someone whose plan is answer four above (get certified and work), it is a far cheaper route than a bachelor’s, and almost nobody is taking it.
There is no Florida licence for personal trainers, and no programmatic accreditor for a fitness degree. What employers and insurers actually check is a certification, and they are not all equivalent. The distinction that matters is whether the certifying body is itself accredited — the recognised mark is NCCA accreditation, held by the major bodies (ACSM, NASM, ACE, NSCA and others).
⚠⚠ This is the same trap this site has now documented three times — in interior design, where the college is not the credential, and in chemistry, where the ACS approves the department but the student earns the certified degree. Here it is sharper: your degree is not the credential at all. A four-year kinesiology graduate and a certified trainer with no degree apply for the same floor job, and the certification is the part that is checked.
⚠ The degree’s advantage shows up one level up — clinical exercise physiology, strength and conditioning with a collegiate or professional team, cardiac rehabilitation, corporate wellness programme design, and graduate school. Those roles do read the transcript.
⚠ Exercise physiology is licensed in only one state (Louisiana), so in Florida the clinical roles are gated by employer requirements and certification rather than by law. Ask a prospective employer which certification they require BEFORE choosing which exam to sit; hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation and a commercial gym do not want the same one.
Almost every Florida course carries the statewide note “guaranteed transfer to institution offering same course.” PET is an exception, and the exceptions are not random: 13 of 122 active undergraduate PET numbers are marked NOT AUTOMATICALLY TRANSFERABLE — about 11%, against roughly 2% in a typical prefix.
And they cluster on exactly the courses this career is built from:
| Group | Numbers |
|---|---|
| Exercise testing and fitness assessment | PET4550, PET4550L, PET4551, PET3551, PET2385 |
| Athletic training clinical experience | PET3672, PET3673, PET3627C, PET4624, PET4625 |
| Biomechanics and coaching | PET3312C, PET4312, PET3765, PET4765 |
⚠⚠ The reason is not administrative sloppiness — it is that these are hands-on competency courses, and a receiving programme has to attest to your competence under its own standards. It cannot do that on another institution’s credit. The same logic appears in nursing, respiratory care and the other clinical fields on this site.
What to do about it: if you plan to transfer, take the assessment and clinical courses after you arrive at the institution you will graduate from, and take the transferable foundations — anatomy, physiology, nutrition, statistics, psychology — first. ⚠ Get a written answer before you enrol in a course that may not count.
This family is taught under PET (physical education and coaching, more state colleges) and APK (applied kinesiology, almost entirely universities). Carrier counts are small throughout — PET2622 Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries reaches nine institutions and nothing else in either prefix reaches five.
⚠⚠⚠ The trap is anatomy and physiology, and this site has documented it as the most damaging prefix divergence in Florida. The subject is taught as BSC2085C/BSC2086C and as APK2100C/APK2105C. Nearly every health-professions programme names the BSC numbers in its prerequisites, and a student who took the APK version may find it is not accepted.
⚠⚠ If physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant or nursing is anywhere in your plan — and for a large share of kinesiology students it is — take the BSC sequence. The APK version is a good course and it is the wrong identifier to be holding at application time. Check the prerequisite list of a target programme literally, by number, in your first year.
⚠ Nothing on either page. Growth is attributed to gym membership, fitness classes, employer wellness programmes, obesity, and — specifically — “older adults who want low-impact forms of exercise and relief from arthritis and other ailments”, plus the rising prevalence of chronic conditions on the exercise physiology side.
⚠⚠ That is worth saying plainly: this is a career whose product is physical presence and personal accountability, and the federal projections show no technological dampening at all. The exposure here is to competition and to price, not to automation — which is a different problem and has a different answer: specialise, credential up, and move toward the clinical and management ends.
BSC anatomy and physiology sequence, not the APK one, if any health profession is a possibility. There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
No other career on this site is filed in the same field yet — which says nothing about the career, only that we have not written its neighbours. Browse all career paths, or see what else is filed under PARKS, RECREATION, LEISURE, FITNESS, AND KINESIOLOGY.
Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 16 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
Requirements change. These are the authorities that decide them — check them directly before committing to a route.
