44.07 Social Work · SOC 21-1021
816,100 jobs nationally and about 69,100 openings a year — one of the largest openings figures on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ But the specialties people enter the field for pay the least: child, family and school social work is $59,550 and mental health and substance abuse $60,280, while "all other" — largely policy and administration — is $71,900. ⚠⚠ And the clinical licence needs a CSWE-accredited master's plus two years of supervised practice after it.
| Specialty | 2025 median |
|---|---|
| ✅ Social workers, all other — largely policy, administration, macro practice | $71,900 |
| Healthcare social workers | $67,880 |
| ⚠ Mental health and substance abuse social workers | $60,280 |
| ⚠⚠ Child, family and school social workers | ⚠⚠ $59,550 |
| All social workers | $61,780 |
⚠⚠⚠ Child welfare and clinical mental health — the two things most people picture when they say social work — are the bottom two. The best-paid category is the residual one: policy, administration and programme management. Healthcare social work sits comfortably above both clinical specialties.
⚠ Say this plainly rather than around it: the clinical licence takes a master's plus two supervised years, and it leads into the lower-paid half of the field. People do it because the work matters to them, which is a good reason — but it should be a decision made with the table in front of you.
| Social workers | |

| 2025 median | $61,780 |
| Employed (2025) | 816,100 |
| Annual openings | ✅ 69,100 |
| Growth 2025–35 | 6% — faster than average |
| Entry | bachelor's or master's; clinical positions require the master's |
⚠⚠ 69,100 openings a year against 816,100 jobs is a replacement rate of about 8.5%. Some of that is growth; a great deal of it is turnover, and in child welfare especially the turnover is the profession's oldest known problem. Read it as easy entry and hard retention rather than as pure opportunity.
| Florida State MSW (the state's largest producer) | Credit hours |
|---|---|
| Traditional (any bachelor's) | 61 |
| ✅ Advanced standing (CSWE-accredited BSW) | 39 |
⚠⚠⚠ Twenty-two credit hours — roughly a third of a master's degree — is what a CSWE-accredited BSW is worth. That is the clearest answer on this site to the question of whether the named undergraduate major matters, and it is a bigger discount than anything on the health administration or public health pages.
⚠⚠ And it expires. FSU requires the BSW within the past seven years; beyond that you need a waiver supported by social work employment in that period. So the discount rewards going straight through, and someone returning to study at forty may find it gone.
⚠ The extent of advanced standing varies by programme. Ask each one for its credit total and its recency rule before you choose where to apply.
Measured across the whole Florida course file:
| Prefix | Universities | State colleges | Technical colleges |
|---|---|---|---|
SOW social work | ✅ all 9 | 10 | 0 |
HUS human services | ⚠⚠ 0 | 17 | 2 |
⚠⚠⚠ Not one Florida public university carries a single HUS course. Human services is a state-college and technical-college subject; the CSWE-accredited degree is a university one. The two prefixes do not connect anywhere in the state.
⚠⚠ What that means for a student: a human services associate degree is a real credential for direct-service work — case aide, residential counsellor, community outreach — and it earns no advanced standing toward an MSW and does not lead to the LCSW. Ten state colleges produce 276 human services credentials a year, and none of those graduates has begun a social work degree.
⚠ If licensure is the goal, get into a CSWE-accredited BSW. SOW2020 and SOW2031 are carried at a handful of state colleges, so the lower-division start exists — but confirm in writing that the credits articulate into a CSWE-accredited bachelor's before you rely on them.
Nine public universities award the degree, and the master's outnumbers the bachelor's: 1,164 against 712.
| Institution | MSW (2023) |
|---|---|
| Florida State University | 431 |
| University of Central Florida | 193 |
| Florida Atlantic University | 143 |
| University of South Florida | 127 |
| University of West Florida | 120 |
| Florida International University | 74 |
| University of North Florida | 28 |
| FAMU / Florida Gulf Coast | 24 each |
⚠ A data note worth knowing if you go looking yourself: Florida's MSW output is split across two federal codes. Only 368 appear under Social Work; the other 796 are filed as Clinical/Medical Social Work, and four institutions record none at all under the obvious code. Counting one code understates the state's MSW production by two-thirds.
⚠⚠⚠ If you might want the LCSW, do a CSWE-accredited BSW and go straight to the MSW. It is worth 22 credit hours at FSU, and the eligibility window is seven years. Nothing else on this path is that concrete.
⚠⚠ Do not mistake human services for social work. They are different prefixes at different institutions and they do not meet. The human services associate degree is good work and a poor foundation for this licence.
⚠ Look seriously at healthcare social work and at the macro track. They pay $67,880 and $71,900 against $59,550 for child welfare, and hospital and administrative posts tend to have better hours and lower caseloads.
⚠⚠ Plan the two post-master's supervised years deliberately. Find out who will supervise you and whether they are licensed before you take the job — an intern year with no qualified supervisor is two years you cannot count.
And treat the caseload question as the interview question. Ask what the average caseload is, what it is supposed to be, and how long the last three people in the post stayed. The answers tell you more than the salary does.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
No other career on this site is filed in the same field yet — which says nothing about the career, only that we have not written its neighbours. Browse all career paths, or see what else is filed under PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND SOCIAL SERVICE PROFESSIONS.
Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 14 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
