Course Description
COS0003C – Hair Cutting and Styling Services is a Postsecondary Adult Vocational (PSAV) clock-hour course in the Florida Cosmetology program (CIP 12.0401). The course develops competencies in hair design principles, hair cutting techniques, and hair styling/finishing services, building on the foundational theory and safety training established in COS0002C. The course aligns with the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Curriculum Framework for Cosmetology and prepares students for the practical components of the Florida Cosmetology licensing examination administered by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
Students develop hands-on proficiency in fundamental hair cutting forms (blunt, graduated, layered, increased layers), advanced cutting techniques (texturizing, slicing, point cutting, razor cutting), wet and thermal styling, blowdrying, hair pressing, and braiding. Coursework integrates substantial mannequin-head practice followed by supervised work with live clients in the school's clinical lab.
This course is offered at approximately 36 Florida technical colleges as a core practical module within the 1,200-hour Florida Cosmetology program.

Career Pathways
COS0003C is a core practical course in the Florida Cosmetology program. Successful completion of the full 1,200-hour program leads to Florida cosmetology licensure and supports entry into:
- Salon Stylist / Hair Designer (SOC 39-5012) — The primary career path; cutting and styling represent the highest-volume services in most full-service salons.
- Cutting Specialist — Some stylists specialize in cutting (precision cutting, men's cutting, kids' cuts) within larger salon teams.
- Bridal and Event Stylist — Specializing in special-occasion styling for weddings, formals, photo shoots; particularly active in Florida's wedding-destination economy.
- Salon Booth Renter / Independent Stylist — Self-employed stylist renting a booth in an established salon.
- Mobile Stylist — Providing in-home or on-site cutting and styling services.
- Theatrical / Film / TV Stylist — Florida's expanding film production economy creates entertainment-industry styling opportunities.
- Cosmetology Educator — With additional teaching credentials (e.g., Florida cosmetology instructor licensure), graduates can teach in technical college programs.
Special Information
Position in the Cosmetology Program
COS0003C is one of the central practical modules in the Florida PSAV Cosmetology program. Hours completed in this course count toward the 1,200-hour total required for Florida licensure eligibility. The course typically follows COS0002C (theory and foundations) and is taken concurrently with or sequentially before COS0009C (chemical services).
Practical Examination Preparation
Cutting techniques covered in COS0003C are directly tested on the Florida cosmetology practical examination, which includes haircut demonstration as a major component. Students should target proficiency in basic haircut forms and styling that can be demonstrated within examination time limits and following examination scoring rubrics published by the Florida DBPR.
Clinic Experience
Most Florida cosmetology programs include a substantial clinic component in COS0003C, where students perform supervised cuts and styles on members of the public who pay reduced clinic fees. Clinic experience is essential preparation for both the practical exam and post-licensure salon work, providing exposure to diverse hair textures, real client communication, and the pace of professional service.
Advanced Education and Continuing Education
After licensure, Florida cosmetologists must complete continuing education to maintain their license. Many cosmetologists pursue advanced education from professional brands (Vidal Sassoon, Toni&Guy, Aveda, Sam Villa, Bumble and bumble) that build on the cutting fundamentals introduced in COS0003C.
