Course Description

ETD2540C — Civil Drafting is a combined lecture and laboratory course within the Engineering Technologies > Engineering Design Drafting taxonomy of Florida's Statewide Course Numbering System (SCNS). The course provides students with exposure to the specific elements and processes involved in civil engineering drafting projects. Topics include mapping symbols and legends, an introduction to surveying concepts, topographic maps and contour lines, plot and site plans, roadway alignments and profiles, and grading cut/fill diagrams. Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) techniques — primarily using AutoCAD — are utilized throughout to lay out property lines, create contour maps, develop roadway alignments and profiles, and produce cut/fill diagrams. The course is designed to prepare students for technical drafting roles in civil engineering, land development, and infrastructure industries.

Graduates with civil drafting competencies are prepared to pursue entry-level and advancing roles in civil engineering, land development, infrastructure, and construction industries. Technical drafters work in close association with engineers, designers, architects, project managers, and fabricators to help design and document new projects.

Students may be eligible to receive college credit for prior coursework or passing industry certification exams in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or related software, subject to institutional LEAP (Learning Earned by Achievement and Prior experience) evaluation. Building a professional portfolio of completed civil drafting projects is strongly recommended for employment applications.
