Course Description

SPC2608 – Public Speaking is a 3-credit lecture-discussion-and-performance course in which students develop the theoretical foundations and practical skills to speak effectively in public, social, academic, and professional contexts. Students prepare and deliver multiple speeches across recognized speech genres — typically including the introduction speech, the demonstration or informative speech, the persuasive speech, and a special-occasion or impromptu speech — while learning communication theory, audience analysis, research and source evaluation, organization and outlining, language style, delivery techniques, and active listening. The course balances oral and written communication, with students producing speech outlines, rhetorical analyses, and self-evaluations alongside the speeches themselves.

The course sits within the Florida Statewide Course Numbering System (SCNS) under Communication > Speech and is offered at approximately 28 Florida public institutions. SPC2608 is the flagship public speaking course in the Florida College System and State University System, satisfying communication-skills requirements for nearly all degree pathways and serving as the foundation course for Communication Studies majors and minors. At the University of Florida, the course is administered by the William and Grace Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication and supported by a free Public Speaking Lab; similar support structures exist at other SUS institutions.

SPC2608 is a writing-intensive course; in addition to oral performance, students produce substantial written work in the form of fully developed outlines, source citations, audience-analysis reports, rhetorical analyses, and speech self-critiques. The course is distinct from SPC1608 (Public Speaking), a freshman-level course offered at fewer institutions, and from SPC1017 (Speech), a more general introductory communication course.

Special Information

Articulation and Transfer

SPC2608 is part of the Florida common course numbering system and articulates seamlessly to all SUS institutions. It satisfies the communication or speech component of general education at most Florida public institutions. A grade of C or higher is required for the course to count toward general education, major, or minor requirements at most institutions.

Course Format and Workload

SPC2608 is typically a lecture-discussion-and-performance course meeting three hours per week. Expect 4–6 graded speeches across the semester, fully developed speech outlines for each, an audience-analysis assignment, a rhetorical analysis paper, regular peer feedback during in-class speeches, possibly midterm and final exams covering theory and concepts, and a substantial commitment to in-class attendance. Speech-day attendance is typically mandatory and not subject to make-up. Out-of-class time is heavy: each speech requires 8–12 hours of research, outlining, and rehearsal.

Speech Anxiety and Support

Speech anxiety (also called communication apprehension) is normal — the great majority of students experience some level of nervousness about public speaking. Most institutions explicitly address this through textbook content, in-class exercises, and access to support resources like Public Speaking Labs. Florida institutions typically encourage students experiencing high anxiety to engage with these resources rather than avoid the course; substitution of SPC2608 with another communication course is rarely permitted at the SUS level.

Prerequisites

The standard prerequisite is ENC1101 (Composition I) with a minimum grade of C at most Florida institutions. Some institutions list no formal prerequisite or only college-readiness in reading and writing. Specific requirements vary by institution.

Course Code Variations

Florida institutions consistently title this course "Public Speaking" or "Introduction to Public Speaking." The SCNS code SPC2608 is standard. Related courses with different SCNS codes:
