Industrial Production Technology

Industrial production technology programmes train the people who make production work better — process and layout, quality systems, lean methods, scheduling and inventory — usually alongside industrial engineers rather than on the machines themselves.

The degrees this program covers
An associate degree, usually two years, and at several colleges a route into a bachelor's in engineering technology or operations. ⚠⚠ Read the occupation data before treating it as the finish line: 53% of O*NET's respondents said a BACHELOR'S degree is required for industrial engineering technician work and 29% an associate — the highest bachelor's expectation of any technician occupation on this site. ⚠ The individual courses are far more widely available than the degree, and several of them (quality assurance, lean and six sigma) are worth taking on their own account because they travel into every manufacturer.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Industrial Engineering Technician
Industrial engineering technicians make production work better — process and layout, quality data, lean methods and scheduling — beside industrial engineers rather than on the machines. ⚠ Median $66,120, and the highest bachelor's expectation of any technician occupation here: 53%. ⚠ It also covers quality-control inspection — a far larger occupation that Florida barely teaches as a programme.
Manufacturing Production Supervisor
First-line supervisors run a production crew — scheduling, training, safety, quality and the paperwork behind all of it. ⚠ It is the largest source of annual openings on this site (67,700 a year) at a median of $74,450, and it has no degree behind it: nearly two thirds of entrants report no degree at all. This page is about how the promotion is actually reached.
Production Technician and Assembler
Assemblers and production workers build what a factory makes. It is one of the largest groups of manufacturing jobs in the country, and the usual way into the industry. ⚠ No credential is required to start. Florida's 150- to 500-hour courses help you get hired at better plants, earn a soldering certification, and start the climb to technician, inspector or supervisor.
Semiconductor Technician
Semiconductor technicians make microchips: they work in cleanrooms, running and maintaining the tools that pattern, etch, deposit and package silicon. ⚠ A small occupation growing much faster than average, and Florida pays it almost $11,000 above the national median. Florida's programmes are new: an 18-credit cleanroom certificate that stacks into a calculus-based A.S.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Logistics and Supply Chain Analyst
⚠ Not a route to the analyst job by itself, but the commonest way people already working in a plant move into materials and scheduling — and its courses (production and inventory control, lean) are the same ones.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Advanced Manufacturing Technology 28 Florida schools
⚠ The hands-on counterpart at the same colleges: this programme improves the process, that one keeps the machines running. Many students end up taking courses from both.
Industrial and Systems Engineering 6 Florida schools
⚠ The four-year degree, and in this field it matters more than usual — over half of employers in the technician occupation ask for a bachelor's. Four Florida institutions award it.
Engineering Technology 76 Florida schools
The umbrella series — 76 institutions, and where the neighbouring branches of this family live.
Logistics and Supply Chain Management 23 Florida schools
The plant-floor end of the same material: production and inventory control, scheduling and lean methods. ⚠ Worth knowing because a manufacturer's supply chain jobs are frequently filled from inside the plant rather than from a logistics degree.

Florida public institutions offering this program

19 institutions awarded a credential in this field in 2023, at these levels: Associate, Certificate (1-2 years), Certificate (12 weeks-1 year). A school appears here if it awards anything in the field, however limited its offering — a technical college teaching only practical nursing has a nursing program. Listed alphabetically, not ranked.
