Statistics

Statistics programmes teach how to reason from data that is incomplete, noisy and imperfectly collected — study design, estimation, inference, regression, and the judgement about when a number means anything at all. It is the discipline the newer data programmes are built on top of.

The degrees this program covers
A Bachelor of Science in Statistics, with master’s and doctoral degrees above it, at six Florida public institutions — every one of them awarding the bachelor’s. ⚠ At several schools it sits inside the mathematics department rather than standing alone, so look for a statistics TRACK as well as a named degree. There is no licence in this field.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Data Scientist
Data scientists turn messy data into decisions — cleaning and preparing it, building and validating statistical and machine-learning models, and explaining the result to people who will act on it. ⚠ There is no licence, no entrance examination and, for most people now working in the field, no data science degree: the occupation is older than the major.
Financial Analyst
Financial analysts value companies and securities, build the models firms decide by, and measure the risk of being wrong. ⚠ A median of $103,570 with 7% growth. ⚠⚠ It is a CHOICE path, but a concentrated one: counted degrees put business at about half of working analysts, with the social sciences — economics among them — the next largest block. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding that should redirect some readers: the ANALYTICAL roles in this family are growing at 7% while the ADVISORY ones grow at 1%, despite paying the same or more. This page covers four roles.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Data Science and Analytics 13 Florida schools
The newer programme built on the same foundation. ⚠ The honest difference: data science adds programming, machine learning and data engineering; statistics goes deeper into inference and study design, and travels further into research, biostatistics and government work.
Computer Science 16 Florida schools
The other half of most data work. A statistics degree plus real programming ability is a stronger combination than either alone, and it is what most job adverts are actually describing.
Finance 14 Florida schools
⚠ Worth considering seriously if the risk and quantitative side of finance is the draw. Financial risk specialists earn a higher median than analysts ($117,330 against $103,570) and the work is statistical modelling. ⚠⚠ A finance degree with a statistics minor is a stronger quantitative position than either alone, and it is the combination risk and quant job adverts describe.

Florida public institutions offering this program

6 institutions awarded a credential in this field in 2023, at these levels: Bachelor's, Certificate (<12 weeks), Certificate (12 weeks-1 year), Doctorate (research/scholarship), Master's, Postbaccalaureate certificate. A school appears here if it awards anything in the field, however limited its offering — a technical college teaching only practical nursing has a nursing program. Listed alphabetically, not ranked.
