Surgical Technology

Surgical technology programmes train the person who sets up and guards the sterile field in an operating theatre — preparing instruments and equipment before the case, scrubbing in alongside the surgeon, passing instruments through the procedure, and counting every sponge and needle before the patient is closed. It is a short, intensely practical credential, taught mostly as a certificate and mostly at technical colleges.

The degrees this program covers
Predominantly a CERTIFICATE field: of 326 Florida completions in the 2023 federal award year, 208 were certificates of one to two years and 114 were associate degrees, across 25 public institutions. ⚠ Technical colleges carry a large share of it — Sheridan, Orange, Lorenzo Walker, Erwin, Traviss, Lindsey Hopkins and Suncoast between them produce roughly a third of the state's graduates. ⚠⚠ The delivery split matters more here than the credential name: the same training exists as college-credit courses and as a clock-hour PSAV programme of about 1,030 hours divided into three occupational completion points, and only the first counts toward a degree. ⚠⚠⚠ And unlike every other health programme on this site, FLORIDA DOES NOT LICENSE THIS OCCUPATION — there is no state board and no state credential, so the accreditation of the programme you choose is the only thing standing between you and an unusable qualification. Check CAAHEP or ABHES accreditation yourself before enrolling. ⚠ A much shorter related credential exists: the central service (sterile processing) technician, about 210 clock hours.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Physician Assistant
Diagnosing, managing and prescribing across essentially every specialty — $135,880 median, 162,700 employed, 12,000 openings a year, growing much faster than average. ⚠⚠⚠ The barrier is not the transcript. PAEA puts the median matriculant at about 3,200 hours of direct patient contact — one to three years of clinical work BEFORE the programme starts — and Florida's six public programmes award 225 master's degrees a year between them. ⚠⚠ So the real question this page answers is: which job do you take first?
Surgical Technologist
Surgical technologists build and defend the sterile field in an operating theatre — setting up instruments and equipment, scrubbing in with the surgical team, passing instruments through the case, and counting every sponge and needle before the patient is closed. ⚠ A median of $64,650, usually reached through a certificate rather than a degree. ⚠⚠⚠ And this is the one health credential on this site that FLORIDA DOES NOT REGULATE — no licence, no board, no state gate — which makes checking your programme's accreditation entirely your job. Several commercial sites say otherwise; they are wrong, and this page shows why.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Nursing 78 Florida schools
⚠ The level above in the same room, and the move many surgical technologists eventually make: a perioperative RN circulates the case, assesses the patient and can progress into charge and management roles that are closed to a technologist. ⚠⚠ The surgical technology credential gives NO advanced standing toward nursing — you start the nursing programme from the beginning. Nursing is also at 78 Florida institutions against 25.
Emergency Medical Services 39 Florida schools
⚠ The closest structural comparison on this site: both are certificate-first acute-care credentials taught heavily at technical colleges, both stack short exit points, and both pay in the low-to-mid sixties. ⚠⚠ The difference is the environment — EMS is unscheduled, outdoors and unpredictable, surgical technology is a scheduled list in one controlled room. People who want the acute work without the chaos usually mean this one.
Physician Assistant Studies 6 Florida schools
⚠ Named specifically for applicants aiming at surgical PA practice, which is a large share of the profession and the part autonomous APRN practice does not reach. Scrubbing cases is hands-on hours and it is directly relevant experience for a surgical programme.
