Career paths in this area

Logistics and Supply Chain Analyst SOC 13-1081
Logisticians decide where goods sit, how they move and what it costs — purchasing, inventory, transportation and network design. ⚠ It is the fastest-growing and best-paid occupation in this cluster (a median of $82,320, growth of 18% on the latest federal projection), and there is no single required major: 75% hold a bachelor's, and business, supply chain and engineering all lead here. So does the military.
Lawyer SOC 23-1011
Lawyers advise and represent clients in courts, before agencies and in private dealings — researching the law, drafting documents, negotiating, and arguing cases. In Florida the route runs through a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school, the Florida Bar Examination and the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination. ⚠ There is no required or preferred undergraduate major: law-school applicants arrive from every field listed below.
Business Administration — 1,559 applicants, 2.1% (LSAC, 2018–19).
Farmer, Rancher and Agricultural Manager SOC 11-9013
⚠⚠⚠ 67% of this occupation is self-employed, and BLS puts the entry-level education at a HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA plus five or more years of experience. For most farmers the entry requirement is land and capital, not a qualification. ⚠⚠ The degree leads to the other third: the hired farm, ranch, grove, nursery and greenhouse managers, who are the only people the $89,900 median describes — and who in Florida earn $141,370 at the 75th percentile. This page explains what the degree is actually for.
⚠⚠ Business Administration and Management — BLS names business alongside agriculture as a degree field for this occupation, and it is taught at far more Florida institutions than agribusiness.
Commercial and Airline Pilot SOC 53-2012
⚠⚠ The commercial certificate (250 hours) lets you be paid to fly, but airlines need 1,500, and nearly everyone fills the gap by working as a flight instructor or charter pilot. ⚠⚠⚠ The cost is flight time, not tuition: one Florida college publishes $64,579.80 in flight fees against $4,838.28 in tuition. A qualifying aviation degree cuts the airline minimum to 1,250 or 1,000 hours. Median pay: $123,220 for commercial pilots, $232,140 for airline pilots.
⚠ Business Administration — BLS: airline pilots "typically need a bachelor's degree in any field, including transportation, engineering, or business." A business degree with separate flight training is a real route, though it does not reduce the ATP hours.
Commercial Truck Driver SOC 53-3032
⚠⚠ A federally licensed job with about 214,500 openings a year and a training requirement that became federal law in 2022: first-time Class A and B CDL applicants must train with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Florida's public Class A course is 320 clock hours. ⚠ Florida pays $50,640 at the median against $58,640 nationally, and drivers under 21 may drive only within Florida.
⚠ Business Administration and Management — the route off the road into dispatch, fleet and transport management, which the logistics programmes also serve.
Cosmetologist, Barber, Nail and Skin Care Specialist SOC 39-5012
⚠⚠ A licensed trade: Florida law sets the training hours, 1,200 for a cosmetologist and 900 for a barber, and both licences need an exam. ⚠⚠⚠ Most people in it work for themselves (BLS: 80% of barbers, 48% of hairdressers), and the wage figures leave them out. Among employees, a Florida hairdresser's median is $29,530 and a barber's $49,410, yet Florida trains six cosmetologists for every barber. This page compares the four licences and what the programmes actually run.
⚠ Business Administration — named because BLS reports most barbers (80%) and nearly half of hairdressers (48%) are self-employed. The step from working a chair to running a shop is a business step, not more cosmetology.
Urban and Regional Planner SOC 19-3051
⚠⚠ The planning degree is a master's: all five PAB-accredited programmes in Florida are master's, and they award about 104 a year against 13 planning bachelor's (FAU only). So the undergraduate major is a choice, and this page compares the routes. ⚠ Florida law requires every county and city to maintain a comprehensive plan and review it every seven years, which is why 74% of planners work for local government. Median pay $89,320 nationally, $80,720 in Florida.
⚠ Business Administration — named by BLS as a feeder background: development finance, budgets and economic development are business skills.
Manufacturing Production Supervisor SOC 51-1011
First-line supervisors run a production crew — scheduling, training, safety, quality and the paperwork behind all of it. ⚠ It is the largest source of annual openings on this site (67,700 a year) at a median of $74,450, and it has no degree behind it: nearly two thirds of entrants report no degree at all. This page is about how the promotion is actually reached.
Business administration, management and operations. Florida awarded about 1,500 operations management and supervision credentials (52.0205) in 2023, almost all certificates, 1,469 of them at Valencia College; industrial production managers are typically expected to hold a business or engineering bachelor's (BLS).
Human Resources Specialist SOC 13-1071
Human resources specialists recruit and hire, administer pay and benefits, interpret employment law and policy, and handle the disputes and complaints that come with employing people. ⚠ A median of $75,940 across 939,700 jobs, all of it growing. ⚠⚠ It is the most open CHOICE path on this site: business supplies only about a quarter of HR workers, PSYCHOLOGY is the second largest feeder, and 16% have no degree beyond some college. ⚠⚠⚠ And the money is in progression, not credentials — the step to HR manager is worth $73,340 and asks for experience, not another degree.
Business administration, management and operations — 46 Florida public institutions and roughly 19,500 credentials, the largest programme footprint in the state, and where human resources is actually taught as a concentration. ⚠ Business supplies about a quarter of working HR staff, the largest single field.
Construction Manager SOC 11-9021
Construction managers plan, price, schedule and deliver building projects — coordinating trades, controlling cost, enforcing code and safety, and answering for the programme. ⚠ A median of $114,990 with 9% growth, on a route with no licence gate at entry — compare architecture at $99,280 after an accredited degree, 3,740 supervised hours and a six-division exam. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding that matters most in Florida: a construction degree is worth THREE YEARS of site experience toward a contractor licence under s. 489.111. This page covers three related roles, and two routes that look alike and end in different places.
⚠ Business administration — accepted by employers hiring construction managers, since the federal handbook names business as a suitable degree field. ⚠⚠ But it does NOT satisfy Florida's contractor-licence education pathway, which names engineering, architecture and building construction only.
Paralegal SOC 23-2011
Paralegals do the substantive legal work that does not require a licence — drafting pleadings and contracts, investigating facts, searching records, managing discovery and keeping cases organised. ⚠ A median of $62,890 on an associate degree, at 32 Florida institutions. ⚠⚠⚠ Read the outlook honestly: this is the only path on this site where the federal handbook names ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE as a reason demand will be limited, and it projects 0% growth. That does not make it a bad career, but it changes how you should enter it.
⚠ Business administration — the BLS notes that employers preferring a bachelor's often hire candidates who majored in social science or BUSINESS and added a paralegal certificate. With 46 Florida public institutions, it is the most available degree that route can be built on.
School Teacher (K–12) SOC 25-2021
School teachers plan and deliver the curriculum, assess what has been learned, manage a classroom and account for every child's progress. ⚠ This page covers elementary, middle, secondary and special education together, because in Florida they share one certification system and differ mainly by which subject examination you sit. ⚠⚠⚠ And it leads with the finding a Florida student most needs: the state ranks around 19th nationally for STARTING pay and 50th for AVERAGE pay. The salary that recruits you is competitive; the one you reach after fifteen years is not.
⚠ Business administration, and by extension any bachelor's degree — because Florida's alternative certification route accepts a degree in ANY field plus the subject-area examination. This is a real door into teaching and the reason the path is more open than it looks.
