Civil engineering technicians support design and construction — drawings and quantities, surveying, materials testing and the site inspection that catches what was built wrong. ⚠ 64,900 employed nationally, and the Florida programme that carries its name is the smallest on this site: eight institutions, 16 credentials.
Licensure and accreditation
⚠ No licence governs technician work, and the education bar is lower than in the other technician occupations here — 30% a post-secondary certificate, 28% some college, 21% an associate degree. ⚠⚠ What matters more is WHERE the training is: only eight Florida institutions award the named degree, so the practical route is construction technology, drafting and surveying courses, plus the short materials-testing certifications (concrete, soils, asphalt) that inspection work actually requires. ⚠ And compare the civil ENGINEERING degree deliberately: it is offered at nine institutions — more than this programme — and under s. 471.013 it reaches a PE in four years of experience rather than six, which matters in civil practice more than in any other discipline.
What the work actually is
O*NET: apply theory and principles of civil engineering in planning, designing and overseeing construction and maintenance of structures and facilities under the direction of engineering staff or physical scientists. The tasks are the project's paperwork and its checking — calculate dimensions, square footage, profile and component specifications and material quantities; read and review project blueprints and structural specifications; draft detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts; inspect project site and evaluate contractor work to detect design malfunctions and ensure conformance to design specifications and applicable codes.
⚠ Inspection is the part that carries responsibility. A civil technician on site is often the person who notices that what is being built is not what was drawn — and saying so early is the whole value of the role.
Projected need
O*NET, on federal projections: 64,900 employed (2024), growth “slower than average (1% to 2%)”, 5,500 openings a year, median wages $64,950 (2025). Education: 30% a post-secondary certificate, 28% some college, 21% an associate degree — notably lower expectations than the industrial or mechanical technician occupations.
⚠⚠⚠ The smallest programme on this site — and what to do about it
Eight Florida public institutions award in civil engineering technology, and they awarded 16 credentials in 2023. For an occupation with 5,500 openings a year nationally, that is close to nothing.
⚠ The work is real; the programme name is not where Florida trains for it. The courses that actually prepare people are filed under construction technology, drafting and surveying, and they are widely available: introduction to structures at nine institutions, construction estimating at nine, blueprint reading and construction drafting at eight, AutoCAD at nine.
⚠ So build the qualification from those, and ask two questions of any college: which of these courses it carries, and what they articulate into. ⚠⚠ And compare the civil ENGINEERING degree honestly — nine institutions award it, which is more than award this technology programme, and it opens the PE route that a technology degree lengthens by two years.
Necessary skills
Drawings, in both directions — reading a construction set properly, and producing clean drafted work in AutoCAD or Civil 3D.
Quantities and estimating. Calculating material and cost from a drawing is a daily task and a hireable skill on its own.
Surveying fundamentals — levels, layout and coordinates. ⚠ Only two or three Florida institutions carry the surveying courses, so this is often learned on the job.
Materials and testing — concrete, asphalt, soils, and the inspection routines that go with them.
Documentation and site communication. Daily reports, RFIs, and telling a contractor that something is wrong in a way that gets it fixed.
Advice
⚠ Do not plan on the named degree without checking it is near you — eight institutions statewide. Build from construction technology, drafting and surveying courses instead if it is not.
Learn Civil 3D as well as AutoCAD if you can. It is what Florida civil consultancies run on, and it is frequently the thing that gets a technician hired.
Get on a site. Inspection and materials-testing work is where technicians are genuinely needed, and testing certifications (concrete, soils, asphalt) are short, cheap and respected.
Florida's work is specific — transportation for FDOT and its consultants, stormwater and drainage, coastal and port projects, and the inspection load that follows every hurricane season.
⚠ Compare the civil engineering degree deliberately. It is offered more widely than this programme, and the licence timetable is four years rather than six — which matters in civil practice more than in any other discipline.
Programs that lead here
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it
covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that
awarded a credential in the field in 2023;
it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different
from the course-based list further down.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification
(ENGINEERING/ENGINEERING-RELATED TECHNOLOGIES/TECHNICIANS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in.
⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and
expensive late.
Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on.
A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own
institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
Introduction to Structures / Statics and Strength of Materials — nine institutions: forces, members and why a structure stands up. The technical foundation of the role.
⚠ ⚠ A college-credit course in an associate-degree programme rather than a clock-hour certificate course — it transfers differently, and the carrier count below is how many Florida public institutions teach it.
Blueprint Reading — eight institutions. ⚠ The single most immediately useful course on this path: everything on a site refers back to the drawing set.
⚠ ⚠ A college-credit course in an associate-degree programme rather than a clock-hour certificate course — it transfers differently, and the carrier count below is how many Florida public institutions teach it.
Construction Drafting — eight institutions: producing the drawings, not only reading them.

Construction Estimating — nine institutions: quantities, materials and cost from a drawing. ⚠ A hireable skill on its own, and the one contractors test for.

Building Construction — seven institutions: methods, sequence and the vocabulary of how a project is actually put together.

Introduction to AutoCAD — nine institutions. ⚠ Ask whether the programme also teaches CIVIL 3D: it is what Florida civil consultancies run on and it is often the hiring difference.

Topographic Drafting and Surveying — ⚠ only three Florida institutions carry it (FIU, State College of Florida, USF), which is why surveying is so often learned on the job in this state.
⚠ ⚠ Surveying is the thinnest part of the civil technician curriculum in Florida: SUR1101C is carried by two institutions and this one by three. If it is not available near you, look for a survey crew that trains — the entry route there is still apprenticeship in practice.
Introduction to Engineering — seven institutions: what engineers do, how projects are organised, and where a technician fits into them.

Where you can take these courses in Florida
27 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is
how many of the 7 listed courses each one carries — it shows where
the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a
degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
