Civil Engineering Technology

Civil engineering technology programmes train the people who support civil design and construction — drafting and quantities, surveying, materials testing, inspection and the documentation a project runs on.

The degrees this program covers
⚠⚠ This is the smallest programme on the site: eight Florida public institutions and 16 credentials in 2023. Read that before planning on it. The work exists — 64,900 civil engineering technicians nationally, 5,500 openings a year — but Florida trains for it mostly through construction technology, drafting and surveying programmes rather than under this name, which is why this page's course list is drawn from those. ⚠ An associate degree here articulates into construction management and engineering technology bachelor's degrees at several colleges; ask before enrolling.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

CAD Drafter
Drafters turn an engineer's or architect's decision into the drawings and models a building or a part is built from. ⚠ The pay is good for a certificate — a median of $66,150 — and the trap is real: Florida teaches this almost entirely as a short certificate, while 42% of employers say they want a bachelor's degree.
Civil Engineering Technician
Civil engineering technicians support design and construction — drawings and quantities, surveying, materials testing and the site inspection that catches what was built wrong. ⚠ 64,900 employed nationally, and the Florida programme that carries its name is the smallest on this site: eight institutions, 16 credentials.
Construction Manager
Construction managers plan, price, schedule and deliver building projects — coordinating trades, controlling cost, enforcing code and safety, and answering for the programme. ⚠ A median of $114,990 with 9% growth, on a route with no licence gate at entry — compare architecture at $99,280 after an accredited degree, 3,740 supervised hours and a six-division exam. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding that matters most in Florida: a construction degree is worth THREE YEARS of site experience toward a contractor licence under s. 489.111. This page covers three related roles, and two routes that look alike and end in different places.

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Civil Engineering 9 Florida schools
⚠ The four-year degree, at nine institutions — more than award the technology programme. Where a technician degree is not available near you, this is worth comparing directly rather than assuming it is out of reach.
Engineering Technology 76 Florida schools
The umbrella series, and where the construction and drafting programmes that actually teach most of this work are filed.
Advanced Manufacturing Technology 28 Florida schools
A different industry using much of the same technician skill set — measurement, drawings, quality — and far more widely taught, if the construction sector is not the attraction.
Drafting and Design Technology 25 Florida schools
⚠ Where the civil and site drafting work actually sits. Florida's civil-drafting code awards 12 credentials a year across three institutions, so almost nobody enters civil drafting through a drafting programme — they come through civil engineering technology, which also teaches the surveying and the roadway standards the drawings have to follow.
Construction Management 30 Florida schools
⚠ The closest sibling and often the same department. Civil engineering technology leans toward materials, testing and infrastructure; construction management leans toward cost, schedule and contracts. ⚠⚠ If you are unsure which, look at whether the programme's capstone is a design problem or a bid and schedule — that is the real difference.

A school appears here if it awards anything in the field, however limited its offering — a technical college teaching only practical nursing has a nursing program. Listed alphabetically, not ranked.
