Network and Systems Administrator

11.09 Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications · SOC 15-1244

Network and systems administrators build and run the infrastructure everything else sits on — switches, routers and wireless, servers and virtualisation, directory services, cloud platforms, backup and monitoring. ⚠ A median of $99,130, reachable from an associate degree, at 56 Florida institutions — the widest computing footprint in the state. ⚠⚠⚠ But read the outlook honestly: this occupation is projected to DECLINE, and so is the support work below it. The growth is in the two rungs above. This page covers the whole ladder and says where to aim.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠ No licence and no board. What governs this field is VENDOR CERTIFICATION, more than any other computing path: the BLS notes that employers may require administrators to be certified in the products they use, from vendor programmes or vendor-neutral providers. ⚠⚠ Education is unusually open. O*NET respondents name an ASSOCIATE degree most often at 30%, a bachelor's at 27% and a postsecondary certificate at 20% — the only computing path on this site where the two-year degree leads. The BLS lists a bachelor's as typical entry, so read the two together as: a bachelor's helps, an associate plus certifications works, and the certifications are what get screened. ⚠⚠⚠ The single most consequential choice is the DELIVERY FORM, not the credential level: Florida teaches much of this as clock-hour PSAV certificates that carry no college credit, and much of it as A.S. coursework that does. Both reach the same vendor examinations. Only one counts if you later want a degree — and given where this ladder is heading, you are likely to want one.

One ladder, four rungs, and only the top two are growing

This page covers a family, because in Florida they are taught together and people move up through them. The honest picture is a shrinking bottom and a growing top.

RungSOC2025 medianOutlook 2025–35
Computer user support specialist (help desk)15-1232$61,860⚠ −3% decline
Computer network support specialist15-1231$76,220⚠ −3% decline
Network and systems administrator15-1244$99,130⚠⚠ −4% decline
Computer network architect15-1241$134,050✅ 7% or higher
and sideways: information security analyst15-1212$129,180✅✅ 21%

⚠⚠⚠ This is the only path on this site whose anchor occupation is projected to shrink — 323,600 jobs falling by 13,200 over the decade. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to enter it with a plan to move.

⚠ O*NET and the BLS agree on direction and differ on size: O*NET puts administrators at a decline of 1% or lower on the 2024–34 projections; the BLS puts it at −4% on 2025–35. Both say down. There are still 14,300 openings a year, because replacement demand does not stop when growth does — so the jobs exist; the number of them is not increasing.

What the work actually is

O*NET, on network and computer systems administrators: installing, configuring and maintaining an organisation's networks and servers; planning and implementing network security measures; performing data backups and disaster recovery; diagnosing and resolving hardware and software problems; monitoring network performance and user access.

⚠ It is the most hands-on computing job on this site, and the one where a home lab teaches you most of what the course does. It is also the one most exposed to being on call: when the network is down, nobody else can work.

⚠⚠ Why the middle is shrinking, and what to do about it

The BLS names the two advancement routes explicitly: administrators “may advance to become computer network architects” and “also may advance to managerial jobs in IT departments, such as computer and information systems managers”. Separately, the support-specialist handbook says support staff “advance to other information technology positions, such as information security analysts, network and computer systems administrators and software developers”.

⚠⚠⚠ Read those two statements together and the strategy writes itself. The federal projections show the routine administration and support work contracting while design (architect, +7%) and defence (security, +21%) expand. The rung is a good place to stand and a poor place to stay.

⚠⚠ Florida teaches this more widely than any other computing subject — mostly in clock hours

56 Florida public institutions award in this family, producing 1,733 credentials in the 2023 award year. It is where the technical colleges dominate: on the networking code, Sheridan 59, FSCJ 38, Atlantic Technical 23, Immokalee Technical 22, Tom P. Haney 21, Traviss 19, Emerald Coast 19, Radford Locklin 18. On the systems-administration code the balance flips to the state colleges: Valencia 414, Miami Dade 205, Broward 106.

CET 1600 Networking Hardware6✅ college credit
CNT 4603 Network System Administration6✅ college credit, upper division

⚠⚠⚠ The clock-hour courses reach four times as many institutions as the credit-bearing ones. The PSAV stack is genuinely well designed — CTS 0022 help-desk assistant, CTS 0023 network support administrator, CTS 0024 senior network administrator, each 150 hours, each an exit point you can work from. It is a real and sensible route into the work.

⚠⚠ But look again at the ladder table at the top of this page. The rungs those certificates reach are the ones projected to decline; the rungs that are growing — architect, security, management — expect a degree. So the clock-hour route gets you working fastest and positions you worst for the direction this field is moving. If you take it, take it knowingly, and plan how you will add the credit later.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠⚠ Enter here, but do not plan to retire here. The jobs are real and there are 14,300 openings a year, but the occupation is contracting. Pick your next rung — architect, security or management — in your first year, not your fifth, because it determines whether you need the degree.

⚠ Get certified, and get certified early. Employers in this field screen on vendor certifications more than on the degree. Ask a programme which examinations it prepares you for, whether the fee is included, and what its pass rate is.

⚠ Decide the credit question with the ladder in front of you. The clock-hour route is faster to a first job and does not transfer. If architect or security is the destination, the credit route is worth the extra time.

And build a home lab. Second-hand switches, a virtualisation host, a few virtual machines. Nothing else in computing rewards it as directly: this is a field where employers will happily hire someone who can clearly demonstrate that they have broken and fixed the thing already.

Where people come from

There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.

11.10Computer/Information Technology Administration and Management
Computer and information technology administration and management — the systems-administration side, 28 Florida public institutions and 1,292 credentials, taught mostly for college credit at the state colleges (Valencia 414, Miami Dade 205, Broward 106).
11.01Computer and Information Sciences, General
Computer and information sciences, including information technology — the broader foundation, 39 institutions on the IT code, and 25 of them also teach networking. The usual alternative degree for someone heading into this work.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Networking and Systems Administration 56 Florida schools
The programme itself — 56 Florida public institutions, the widest computing footprint in the state, and the one where technical colleges matter most. ⚠ Read its degrees note before enrolling: much of Florida's delivery is clock-hour PSAV carrying no college credit, and the rungs of this ladder that are GROWING expect a degree.
Cybersecurity 35 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The growing move sideways, and the federal handbook says this administration job is where analysts usually come from. Security is projected at 21% against a decline here, at a similar wage ($129,180 against $99,130). ⚠ 27 of the 35 institutions teaching security also teach networking, so it is usually an added emphasis rather than a new school.
Information Technology 39 Florida schools
⚠ The broader degree covering systems, support, databases and cloud as well as the network — 39 Florida public institutions, 25 of which also teach networking. ⚠⚠ Worth choosing over the specialist programme if you may want to move into management or development later, because it keeps more of the ladder open.

Related, but not a route in

Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.

Computer Science 16 Florida schools
⚠ Not the usual route into this job and a poor fit for it — computer science is theory and software construction, where this work is operations. Named because it is the degree that most easily reaches the roles this ladder leads AWAY to, and because 4 of its 16 institutions also teach networking.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCES AND SUPPORT SERVICES) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Cybersecurity Analyst Computer/Information Technology Administration and Management
Cybersecurity analysts defend an organisation's systems and data — hardening configurations, monitoring for intrusion, responding to incidents, testing defences by attacking them, and investigating breaches after the fact. ⚠ A median of $129,180 and 21% projected growth, the fastest of any computing path on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ And the thing nobody says in the advertising: this is NOT an entry-level field. The federal handbook is explicit that analysts typically arrive from systems administration, and a security credential with no operational experience behind it is the commonest disappointment in this job market. This page covers four related roles.
Database Administrator and Database Architect Computer Software and Media Applications
⚠⚠⚠ One job title and two occupations, moving in opposite directions. Database ADMINISTRATORS earn a $104,620 median and are projected at 0% growth over 2025-35; database ARCHITECTS earn $139,500 and are projected at +9% — with FEWER people and MORE annual openings. ⚠⚠ And Florida has no undergraduate database degree at all: the dedicated code produces 62 credentials a year and 61 are one UWF master's. So the specialism is assembled from courses, under seven competing statewide numbers in three different colleges.
Software Developer Computer and Information Sciences, General
Software developers design, build and maintain the systems everything else runs on. ⚠ A median of $135,980 nationally and $130,980 in Florida, on a bachelor's degree, and among the highest-paid on this site — above every two-year route and behind only computer hardware engineering. ⚠⚠ It is a CHOICE path: no single major owns it. Counted degrees show computing majors supplying under a third of working developers and ENGINEERING supplying nearly as many. ⚠⚠⚠ And it is the only career here you can enter with no degree at all — about one developer in five has none.
UX Designer and Web Developer Computer Software and Media Applications
⚠⚠⚠ Web and digital interface designers earn $104,000 against graphic designers' $62,960 — $41,040 for closely related skill pointed at screens rather than print, and BLS expects one to grow and the other to shrink. ⚠⚠ Florida awards 1,133 credentials in this CIP family and NOT ONE is a bachelor's, while BLS gives a bachelor's as the typical entry. The degree-holders came from somewhere else.

Courses along this path

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.

CTS1131 —A+ Hardware Request a guide
A+ Hardware — 7 institutions. The standard first credential for support and infrastructure work, and the cheapest test of whether the hands-on side suits you.
⚠ ⚠ Also carried as CET1178C A+ Hardware Certification (5 institutions), with CTS1133 A+ Software (3) and CET2179C A+ Software Preparation (3) as the paired half. Register by the certification it prepares you for, not the number.
CET1600 —Networking Fundamentals Guide
Networking Hardware — 6 institutions. Switches, routers, addressing, cabling and the first serious look at how traffic actually moves. The foundation course of the whole ladder.
⚠ ⚠ Also carried as the integrated CET1600C at 6 institutions. ⚠⚠ Usually follows a Cisco or CompTIA track — ask which revision, because what transfers to an employer is the certification, not the course number.
CET2620 —Ccna4 Connecting Networks Guide
Network Systems Applications — 5 institutions. The second networking course: services, protocols and the applications that run across the infrastructure.
CGS1700 —Introduction to Operating Systems Request a guide
Introduction to Operating Systems — 4 institutions. Windows and Linux fundamentals, permissions and processes — and the Linux half is the commonest gap in graduates of Windows-only programmes.
⚠ ⚠ If your programme teaches only one operating system, close the other gap yourself. Employers in this field assume both.
CNT4603 —System Administration and Maintenance Request a guide
Computer and Network System Administration — 6 institutions, upper division. Servers, directory services, virtualisation and the administration work the job title names.
⚠ ⚠ Upper division, so it generally requires admission to a bachelor's programme — one of the concrete things the clock-hour route does not reach.
CTS2314 —Network Defense and Countermeasures Request a guide
Network Defense and Countermeasures — 5 institutions. Firewalls, segmentation, intrusion detection and monitoring: the bridge from this job into the security role that pays more and is growing.
⚠ ⚠ Worth taking even if security is not the plan. Defending the network is now part of administering it, and O*NET lists planning and implementing security measures among this job's own tasks.
CIS2321 —Systems Analysis and Design Request a guide
Systems Analysis and Design — 12 institutions. How a business system is supposed to work, which is what separates an administrator who executes tickets from one who can design an improvement.
⚠ ⚠ The course most directly relevant to the architect role, which is the growing rung above this one.
COP1000 —Introduction to Computer Programming Request a guide
Introduction to Computer Programming — 15 institutions. Automation is what keeps an administrator ahead of the work rather than buried in it, and the ones who script are the ones who get promoted.
⚠ ⚠ PowerShell, Bash and Python are the languages that matter here. Whatever your college teaches first, add Python.
CTS0083 —Computer Network Technician Guide
Computer Network Technician — 25 institutions, 150 clock hours. Tied for the most widely available computing course in Florida, and how much of the state actually teaches networking.
⚠ ⚠⚠⚠ PSAV clock hours, NO college credit. It reaches the same vendor examinations and is faster and cheaper. ⚠ But the rungs above this job — architect and security — expect a degree, so taking this route means planning how you will add credit later.
CTS0022 —Network Support Help Desk Assistant Request a guide
Network Support Help Desk Assistant — 14 institutions, 150 clock hours. The entry rung, and a real job: the support role most people in this field actually start in.
⚠ ⚠⚠ It stacks: CTS0022 help desk, then CTS0023 Network Support Administrator, then CTS0024 Senior Network Administrator, 14 institutions each, every one an exit point you can work from. ⚠ Genuinely well designed for someone earning while studying — and the support occupations it leads to are themselves projected to decline 3%, so treat it as a start rather than a destination.
CTS0029 —Wireless Network Administrator Guide
Wireless Network Administrator — 17 institutions, 150 clock hours. Wireless is where most user-facing network problems now live, and it is a distinct skill from wired infrastructure.
STA2023 —Elementary Statistics Guide
Elementary Statistics — 39 institutions. Capacity planning, performance baselines and knowing whether last night's spike meant anything.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions. Runbooks, change records and incident write-ups are what make a network maintainable by anyone other than you — and undocumented infrastructure is how administrators get stuck.
