Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity programmes teach how to defend systems and the data on them — hardening configurations, monitoring for intrusion, responding to incidents, testing defences by attacking them, and meeting the audit and compliance requirements organisations are held to. It is taught in Florida as a specialisation on top of systems administration rather than as a starting point, and that ordering is the most important thing to understand about it.

The degrees this program covers
35 Florida public institutions and 1,063 credentials in the 2023 federal award year, from short certificates to master's degrees — St Petersburg College alone awards 359. ⚠⚠⚠ The single most important thing to know before enrolling: SECURITY IS NOT AN ENTRY-LEVEL FIELD, whatever the marketing says. Employers hiring analysts overwhelmingly want people who have already run networks or systems, because you cannot defend infrastructure you have never operated. A security credential with no operational experience behind it is the commonest disappointment in this part of the job market. ⚠ The honest sequence is usually: an IT or networking foundation, a help-desk or administration job, vendor certifications, and then security — or a security degree taken WITH deliberate hands-on experience alongside it. ⚠⚠ Florida also teaches a large amount of this as clock-hour PSAV certificates at technical colleges, which reach the same vendor examinations but carry no college credit.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Cybersecurity Analyst
Cybersecurity analysts defend an organisation's systems and data — hardening configurations, monitoring for intrusion, responding to incidents, testing defences by attacking them, and investigating breaches after the fact. ⚠ A median of $129,180 and 21% projected growth, the fastest of any computing path on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ And the thing nobody says in the advertising: this is NOT an entry-level field. The federal handbook is explicit that analysts typically arrive from systems administration, and a security credential with no operational experience behind it is the commonest disappointment in this job market. This page covers four related roles.
Network and Systems Administrator
Network and systems administrators build and run the infrastructure everything else sits on — switches, routers and wireless, servers and virtualisation, directory services, cloud platforms, backup and monitoring. ⚠ A median of $99,130, reachable from an associate degree, at 56 Florida institutions — the widest computing footprint in the state. ⚠⚠⚠ But read the outlook honestly: this occupation is projected to DECLINE, and so is the support work below it. The growth is in the two rungs above. This page covers the whole ladder and says where to aim.
Systems Analyst and IT Manager
⚠⚠⚠ Computer and information systems managers earn $175,140 with 55,600 openings a year — and 26% of them report reaching it with SOME COLLEGE AND NO DEGREE, against 48% with a bachelor's and 14% with a master's. ⚠⚠ The rung below, computer systems analyst, is $105,850 across 521,100 jobs. This is the best-paid management occupation on the site and one of the most credential-loose.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Database Administrator and Database Architect
⚠ Named for the same reason as the CIS4368 course row — database security and audit is a genuine specialism, and it is where the two fields meet in Florida's course catalogue.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Networking and Systems Administration 56 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The programme most security employers actually want you to have done first, and 27 of the 35 institutions teaching security also teach networking. You cannot monitor traffic you do not understand or segment a network you have never configured. ⚠ If you are choosing between them at the start, networking first is the more reliable order — security is easier to add later than operations experience is.
Information Technology 39 Florida schools
⚠ The broader foundation, taught at 39 institutions against 35 here, and the one that keeps more options open. ⚠⚠ Twenty institutions teach both, so at most colleges you are choosing an emphasis rather than a different school. Take IT if you are not yet sure which part of computing you want; take security if you already know and can get hands on systems alongside it.
Management Information Systems 13 Florida schools
⚠ A real overlap rather than a neighbour: ISM4323 Information Systems Security is carried by 10 Florida institutions and ISM4324 Cybersecurity Analytics by 6, so security is taught inside the MIS curriculum as well as on its own. ⚠⚠ The governance and risk side of security is closer to MIS than to computer science.
Database and Data Management 5 Florida schools
⚠ Named for a specific course: CIS4368 Database Security and Audits runs at FAMU, FGCU, USF and UWF, and database security is where the two fields actually meet. ⚠⚠ A database professional who can speak to auditors is paid differently from one who cannot.
