Machining Technology

Machining programmes train the people who cut metal to a tolerance — on lathes, mills and grinders, and on the computer-controlled machines that have largely replaced turning handwheels by hand. ⚠ The trade is measured in thousandths, and the part is either in tolerance or it is scrap.

The degrees this program covers
Florida's framework is Machining Technologies, 1,500 hours across four occupational completion points — machinist helper, machinist operator, machinist setup operator, machinist — and the ladder inside it is the career: an OPERATOR runs a machine someone else set up, a SETUP operator prepares it, and a MACHINIST decides how the part will be made. ⚠ A separate 12-credit CNC Machinist/Fabricator college certificate exists for people adding computer control to existing skills. ⚠⚠ The whole programme is taught at only eleven Florida institutions — a small footprint for a trade this fundamental, and worth checking against where you live before you plan on it.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Machinist
Machinists cut metal to a tolerance — setting up lathes, mills, grinders and CNC machines, and deciding how a part on a drawing actually gets made. ⚠ The occupation is flat but replaces about 29,500 people a year, and the money is in setup and programming rather than in running the machine. ⚠ This page also covers the CNC machine operator role, which is the rung below and the one occupation here with a projected decline.
Production Technician and Assembler
Assemblers and production workers build what a factory makes. It is one of the largest groups of manufacturing jobs in the country, and the usual way into the industry. ⚠ No credential is required to start. Florida's 150- to 500-hour courses help you get hired at better plants, earn a soldering certification, and start the climb to technician, inspector or supervisor.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Manufacturing Production Supervisor
⚠ One of the trades supervisors are most often promoted out of — a machinist who can read a process and train others is exactly who a shop puts in charge of a cell.

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Welding Technology 47 Florida schools
⚠ The other half of a fabrication shop, taught at the same colleges: welding joins metal, machining cuts it to size. Holding both is common and makes a technician far more useful in a small shop.
Advanced Manufacturing Technology 28 Florida schools
Where machining sits inside a modern plant — automation, controls and the maintenance of the machines themselves. The usual route from running a machine to keeping the line running.
Engineering Technology 76 Florida schools
The degree route above the bench: CAD/CAM, manufacturing engineering technology and quality, and the step toward programming and process planning rather than production.
Mechanical Engineering Technology 13 Florida schools
The making end of the same work. Technicians who can actually cut metal understand what a drawing costs, and small shops value the combination.

Florida public institutions offering this program

18 institutions awarded a credential in this field in 2023, at these levels: Certificate (1-2 years), Certificate (12 weeks-1 year), Certificate (2-4 years). A school appears here if it awards anything in the field, however limited its offering — a technical college teaching only practical nursing has a nursing program. Listed alphabetically, not ranked.
