Welding Technology

Welding programmes teach people to join metal to a code standard — shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored and gas tungsten arc welding, on plate and on pipe, in every position. ⚠ It is a test-based trade: what you can weld is decided by a test coupon, not by a transcript.

The degrees this program covers
Florida teaches this as CLOCK-HOUR career certificates. The state framework Welding Technology runs 1,050 hours across three occupational completion points — welder assistant, shielded metal arc welder, then welder — and each is a hireable exit on its own. An Advanced Welding Technology certificate (750 hours, two more completion points) adds pipe and career preparation. ⚠⚠ Florida renumbered these courses in 2025 and BOTH families are still being taught: the new staged sequence (PMT0070–0074) at 30 institutions and the older process-by-process one (PMT0011–0016 — SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, pipe) at 19, with 16 colleges carrying both. Register by the PROGRAMME, not the course number. ⚠ A few state colleges add an associate degree above the certificates, usually in welding or manufacturing technology.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Production Technician and Assembler
Assemblers and production workers build what a factory makes. It is one of the largest groups of manufacturing jobs in the country, and the usual way into the industry. ⚠ No credential is required to start. Florida's 150- to 500-hour courses help you get hired at better plants, earn a soldering certification, and start the climb to technician, inspector or supervisor.
Welder
Welders join metal to a code standard — on plate and pipe, in every position, under codes that decide what you are qualified to touch. ⚠ 457,300 people do it nationally with about 45,600 openings a year, and what moves you up the very wide pay range is certifications and positions rather than years served.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Industrial Maintenance Technician
⚠ Not a route in, but the most useful thing to add: a maintenance technician who can weld can repair and fabricate during a breakdown instead of waiting for someone who can.
Machinist
⚠ The realistic alternative if machining is not taught near you, and a common second certificate anyway: 47 institutions against 18, in the same CIP series and often the same building.
Manufacturing Production Supervisor
⚠ The same logic and the widest footprint of any trade in Florida at 47 institutions: fabrication shops promote their supervisors from the bench, not from outside.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Engineering Technology 76 Florida schools
⚠ Where the step up lives: manufacturing and engineering technology associate degrees take welders into inspection, fabrication supervision and quality — the usual route out of the booth without leaving the industry.
Automotive Technology 47 Florida schools
The other large clock-hour trade taught at the same technical colleges, and a common second choice for students deciding between the two. Both are test-and-certification trades; the difference is diagnosis versus fabrication.
Machining Technology 18 Florida schools
⚠ The other half of a fabrication shop, taught at the same colleges: welding joins metal, machining cuts it to size. Holding both is common and makes a technician far more useful in a small shop.
HVAC/R Technology 50 Florida schools
The other large clock-hour trade at the same technical colleges. ⚠ Sheet-metal and pipe skills overlap enough that some HVAC technicians add a welding certificate for commercial and industrial work.
Advanced Manufacturing Technology 28 Florida schools
The fabrication side of the same plant. Maintenance technicians who can weld are markedly more useful in a breakdown, and both certificates are taught at the same technical colleges.
Industrial Machinery Maintenance 7 Florida schools
⚠ A maintenance technician who can weld is markedly more useful in a breakdown — repair, fabrication and improvisation at three in the morning — and welding is taught at 47 institutions against a handful for this.

Florida public institutions offering this program

47 institutions awarded a credential in this field in 2023, at these levels: Certificate (1-2 years), Certificate (12 weeks-1 year), Certificate (2-4 years). A school appears here if it awards anything in the field, however limited its offering — a technical college teaching only practical nursing has a nursing program. Listed alphabetically, not ranked.
