Medical Assisting

The clinical and administrative support role a physician's office, clinic and urgent-care centre runs on — vital signs, patient history, venipuncture, injections, specimen collection and the medical record, all under a physician's direct supervision. ⚠⚠ Florida defines what a medical assistant may do in statute (s. 458.3485) and requires NO licence, certificate or training to do it. Taught at 38 Florida public institutions, overwhelmingly as a one-to-two-year clock-hour certificate at a district technical college.

The degrees this program covers
⚠⚠⚠ THE PROGRAMME HAS FOUR LABELLED EXIT POINTS, AND ALMOST NOBODY TELLS STUDENTS SO. Florida builds its CTE programmes as OCCUPATIONAL COMPLETION POINTS, and the state prints the OCP letter inside the course title. Medical Assisting runs: OCP A Basic Healthcare Worker (HSC0003, 90 hours) — OCP B Phlebotomist (MEA0520, 75 hours) — OCP C Phlebotomist, MA (MEA0521, 75 hours) — OCP D EKG Aide, MA (MEA0543, 75 hours) — OCP E Medical Assistant, three courses of 320 hours each. ⚠⚠ Each of the first four is a JOB TITLE you can leave on and be hired for. A student who completes OCP B can work as a phlebotomist, earn, and come back for the rest; a student who stops at OCP D is an EKG aide. ⚠ The whole thing is roughly 1,300 clock hours, and you do not have to do it in one run. Ask any programme where its OCPs fall and whether it will award the intermediate certificates — not every institution issues them even though the state structures the programme around them. ⚠⚠ Note the credential level: of 485 Florida credentials awarded in 2023, 441 were one-to-two-year certificates and only 26 were associate degrees. This is a CLOCK-HOUR programme, not a degree, and clock hours do not transfer into a degree the way credits do. If a nursing or health-science degree is the eventual goal, say so at the start and ask what articulates.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Health Information Technician, Coder and Medical Office Administrator
⚠⚠⚠ Three different routes wear this name in Florida, they are taught at roughly the same number of institutions, and only ONE of them leads to the field's professional credential. Health information management — 31 institutions, and the associate degree is what makes you RHIT-eligible. Billing and coding — 37 institutions and the largest output, all clock-hour certificates, none of which does. Medical office administration — 36 institutions into an occupation of 850,000 people with no credential ladder at all. ⚠⚠ Choosing wrongly does not waste a term; it forecloses the credential.
Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician
Two of the largest short-certificate routes into health care in Florida, paying within $60 a year of each other and taught at the same technical colleges — and the state treats them completely differently. ⚠⚠⚠ Florida writes down in statute exactly what a medical assistant may do, including venipuncture and administering medication, and requires NO licence, certificate or training to do it. It requires a pharmacy technician, working behind a counter, to register with the Board of Pharmacy and complete a board-approved programme. ⚠⚠ And the medical assisting programme has FOUR labelled exit points you can leave on and be hired at — the pharmacy technician programme has none.
Phlebotomist
The shortest formal route into health care Florida operates. ⚠⚠⚠ Of 772 phlebotomy credentials awarded by 29 Florida public institutions in 2023, EVERY ONE was a certificate of under twelve weeks — about 165 clock hours, most of it at a district technical college. It pays $45,230, essentially the same as a medical assistant or a pharmacy technician on ten times the training. ⚠⚠ And Florida's clinical laboratory licensing statute names phlebotomists in its EXCLUSION, one rung below two occupations the same statute licenses.
Physician Assistant
Diagnosing, managing and prescribing across essentially every specialty — $135,880 median, 162,700 employed, 12,000 openings a year, growing much faster than average. ⚠⚠⚠ The barrier is not the transcript. PAEA puts the median matriculant at about 3,200 hours of direct patient contact — one to three years of clinical work BEFORE the programme starts — and Florida's six public programmes award 225 master's degrees a year between them. ⚠⚠ So the real question this page answers is: which job do you take first?

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Pharmacy Technology 30 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The closest comparison, and the contrast is worth understanding before choosing. Almost identical pay ($45,690 against $45,750), almost identical training length, similar institutions — but Florida REQUIRES a pharmacy technician to register with the Board of Pharmacy and complete a board-approved programme, and requires nothing at all of a medical assistant. ⚠ And the ladders run the other way: medical assisting has four labelled exit points, pharmacy technology has none.
Nursing 78 Florida schools
⚠ The usual next step, and the honest warning is about credit. Medical assisting is a CLOCK-HOUR programme and nursing is a credit programme, so the hours do not simply carry over — what transfers is the clinical confidence, the terminology and, at many institutions, an articulated block for the Basic Healthcare Worker core. Ask the nursing programme in writing what it will accept BEFORE you enrol in medical assisting expecting it to count.
Medical Laboratory Science 14 Florida schools
⚠ Where the phlebotomy exit point can lead. OCP B and OCP C of medical assisting are phlebotomist certificates, and phlebotomy is the entry rung of the clinical laboratory. A medical assistant who found the specimen-collection half the interesting part has a short, well-defined route into laboratory work — and the laboratory ladder goes considerably further, to MLT and then MLS.
Dental Assisting 28 Florida schools
The same shape in a different setting: a short technical-college certificate assisting a licensed practitioner, taught largely at the same institutions. ⚠ Named because students comparing short allied-health certificates are usually comparing these two, and the dental one is smaller and more specialised.
Phlebotomy 29 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ Not a neighbour — the SAME PROGRAMME. Phlebotomy is occupational completion point B and C of Florida's Medical Assisting framework, and MEA0520 and MEA0521 are the courses. So a phlebotomy certificate is literally a partial medical assisting credential, and continuing costs only the remaining OCPs (EKG aide at 75 hours, then medical assistant at 960). ⚠ Ask your institution whether it will count what you have already done.
Medical Office Administration 36 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The closest comparison and often the better buy. Medical assisting covers the same administrative work — MEA0501 Medical Office Procedures, MEA0500 Medical Office Receptionist — AND adds the clinical half, and it has four labelled exit points where this has none. ⚠ If you are choosing between them and are not certain you want to stay out of clinical work, medical assisting keeps more doors open.
Medical Billing and Coding 37 Florida schools
⚠ Named because several institutions teach coding inside the medical assisting framework too (MEA0334C Medical Coding and Insurance Billing), so the same subject appears under two prefixes at two different programme lengths. ⚠⚠ Check which programme a coding course you are offered actually belongs to; it determines what else you will need to finish.
Health Information Management 31 Florida schools
⚠ A neighbouring certificate at many of the same institutions, and the comparison worth making if you are deciding between a clinical and an administrative route. Medical assisting has a clinical half — venipuncture, injections, vital signs — that this does not. ⚠ If the idea of drawing blood is the deciding factor, that is a legitimate way to choose between them.
Physician Assistant Studies 6 Florida schools
⚠ Another common hours route, and a broader one than phlebotomy — vital signs, injections, specimen collection and patient preparation under s. 458.3485. 38 Florida public institutions. ⚠⚠ Note its occupational completion points: the phlebotomy exit comes first at 75 hours, so the two routes are the same programme at different lengths.
