Film and Video Editor

50.06 Film/Video and Photographic Arts · SOC 27-4032

⚠⚠⚠ The occupation everyone assumes is most exposed to generative AI is one where the federal handbook makes NO AI claim at all. BLS projects film and video editors and camera operators to grow 3% to 2035 and names robotic cameras, not AI. ⚠⚠ Editors $75,420, camera operators $74,990, 72,000 jobs, 5,600 openings a year — and 35% of them self-employed. ⚠ Miami Dade College alone awards 45% of Florida's film credentials.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠⚠ NOTHING IS LICENSED AND THE REEL IS THE CREDENTIAL. BLS gives the typical entry as a bachelor's in film, broadcasting, communications or a related field, but there is no licence, no registry and no examination. What gets you hired is work people can watch. ⚠⚠⚠ ON AI, THE HONEST ANSWER IS THAT BLS DOES NOT MAKE A CLAIM HERE — and that is worth stating precisely rather than reading as reassurance. The handbook page for this occupation discusses technology and names DIGITAL CAMERAS changing the job of some camera assistants and ROBOTIC CAMERAS letting one studio operator control several. It does not discuss artificial intelligence. ⚠ Compare graphic design, where BLS says AI is "projected to… reduce the need for these workers", and web development, where it "may soften the employment growth". ⚠⚠ The absence of a statement is not a forecast of immunity; it is what the agency projected at the time it published, on an occupation where the output is a long collaborative artefact rather than a single image. ⚠ Read it as: the routine production layer is where automation lands, and in this field that layer has historically been camera assistance and studio operation rather than editorial judgement. ⚠ 35% self-employment means the real credential for more than a third of this workforce is a client list, and the real skill is running a business.

⚠⚠⚠ Where BLS does and does not name AI

OccupationProjection 2025–35What the BLS handbook says about automation
Medical records specialist✅ +8%automation discussed; no dampening claim
Web / digital interface designer✅ +5%AI “may soften the employment growth”
⚠ Graphic designer⚠⚠ −2%AI “projected to… reduce the need for these workers”
✅ Film and video editor / camera operator✅ +3%⚠⚠⚠ no AI claim at all — it names robotic cameras and digital cameras changing camera assistant work

⚠⚠⚠ This is the occupation the public conversation treats as most exposed, and it is the one where the federal statistical agency makes no claim. What BLS actually names is older automation: digital cameras having changed the job of some camera assistants, and robotic cameras letting one studio operator run several.

⚠⚠ Do not read that as safety. The absence of a statement is what the agency projected when it published, not a guarantee. But it is the evidence, and it is better evidence than the commentary.

⚠ The pattern across all four rows is consistent and it is the useful thing to take away: automation lands on the routine PRODUCTION layer. In graphic design that layer is most of the job. In film it has historically been camera assistance and studio operation — not editorial judgement about what a scene is doing.

The occupation

Role2025 median
Film and video editor$75,420
Camera operator (television, video, film)$74,990

72,000 jobs, about 5,600 openings a year, 3% growth, and a bachelor's as the typical entry — in film, broadcasting, communications or a related field, which is BLS's own way of saying the subject is not prescribed.

⚠⚠ 35% are self-employed. More than a third of this workforce is freelance, so the median describes a mixed population of staff editors and people who bill by the project. Budget accordingly and learn to price.

⚠⚠ Miami Dade College is 45% of Florida's film education

814 credentials across 19 institutions — 384 short certificates, 266 bachelor's, 118 associate, 25 master's.

⚠ The certificate tier is where the volume is, which fits a freelance industry that hires on the reel. But if you want the bachelor's, the list is much shorter than nineteen.

⚠⚠⚠ Two institutional signatures that will affect your transcript

Florida Atlantic runs the whole prefix at four credits

UCF78 of 103 at 3
USF25 of 25 at 3
UNF24 of 25 at 3
Broward18 of 19 at 3

⚠⚠ That is one institutional decision, not a divergence on individual courses — and it has a useful consequence: an FAU film student accumulates credit faster per course than a comparison of course counts suggests.

Florida State runs on variable credit

⚠⚠⚠ 45 of FSU's 70 film courses carry VARIABLE credit, with UCF carrying 22 variable rows. That is the shape of a production school rather than a studies department — the credit depends on the scope of the project you take on.

⚠ Ask what a registration is worth before you register, and on transfer expect the receiving institution to settle it on the work and the logged hours rather than on the number.

⚠⚠ The numbering is unsettled, in three separate ways

⚠⚠ And the sequence itself diverges. This site's catalogue work found that FIL4036 Film History 1 runs to 1959 statewide, to the 1940s at FAU, and has no boundary at all at UWF because no part 2 exists there — and FAU says part 2 “may be taken before” part 1 while the state record requires the order. Roughly two decades of film history sit inside the course at one institution and outside it at another.

⚠ On transfer, send a screening list or a topic list rather than the course title. Departments place by coverage, and a week-by-week list settles in seconds what a title cannot.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠⚠⚠ Build the reel from the first week and never stop. There is no licence and no registry in this field; what you can show is the entire credential, and it is the one thing a certificate and a bachelor's are equally good at producing.

⚠⚠ Take the AI question seriously but quote the source. BLS names robotic cameras here, not AI, and projects 3% growth — while saying AI will reduce the need for graphic designers. Position on the judgement side regardless, because that is where the evidence points across every occupation on this site.

⚠ Plan for freelancing whether or not you want it. 35% self-employed. Learn rates and contracts early; a short business certificate at a state college is a better semester than another production course.

⚠⚠ Check the credit value before you enrol, at FAU and at FSU especially. Four credits a course at one and variable credit at the other are both fine — but they are not what a transfer evaluator expects, and you should know which you are signing up for.

And look at in-house video before assuming the industry is the only employer. Florida's theme parks, cruise lines, hospitals, universities and agencies all run production teams — salaried, year-round, local, and hiring the same reel.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Film and Video Production 19 Florida schools
The programme — 19 Florida public institutions, 814 credentials. ⚠ Miami Dade College alone awards 367 of them, 45% of the state, mostly as short certificates; UCF 189, Broward 84, FSU 49. ⚠⚠ Read its degrees note on FAU's four-credit signature and FSU's variable-credit one.
Graphic and Digital Design 41 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The neighbour worth comparing on projections rather than on craft: BLS projects graphic design to DECLINE 2% with AI named as the cause, while film and video editing grows 3% with no AI claim made. ⚠ Both are unlicensed portfolio fields.
Web and Interactive Design 34 Florida schools
⚠ Named because almost all video now ships through a screen interface and the skills stack. ⚠⚠ Also on the money: web and digital interface designers earn $104,000 against film editors' $75,420, which is worth knowing before committing the same visual training to one medium.
Instructional Design and Educational Technology 10 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The destination film people rarely consider and probably should. EME6209 Digital Video is taught at five Florida universities, the field screens on a portfolio in the same way, and training and development specialists number 452,300 with 43,900 annual openings — salaried rather than project work.

Related, but not a route in

Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.

Entrepreneurship and Small Business 30 Florida schools
⚠⚠ 35% of film and video editors and camera operators are self-employed. Nothing in a film programme covers rates, contracts, insurance or estimated tax, and Florida teaches short business certificates at 30 institutions.
Hospitality and Tourism Management 23 Florida schools
⚠ Named for a Florida reason: theme parks, cruise lines and the Orlando attractions industry run substantial in-house video teams that hire salaried, year-round and local — a different market from the film industry proper.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Graphic Designer and Animator Design and Applied Arts
⚠⚠⚠ This is the first occupation on this site where BLS names ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE as a reason for a projected decline. Graphic design is forecast to shrink 2% from 2025 to 2035: "Automated design tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI), are projected to make graphic designers more productive and reduce the need for these workers." ⚠⚠ $62,960 median, 16,000 openings a year, 20% self-employed — and the animation half pays $102,030 with 63% self-employed.
Interior Designer Design and Applied Arts
Interior designers plan the inside of buildings — space, light, materials, furniture and the codes that govern all of it. ⚠⚠⚠ The decision this page exists to answer is not which major but WHICH MARKET: in Florida ALL RESIDENTIAL work is exempt from registration by statute, while nonresidential work runs through a 60-credit education floor, up to 5,280 supervised hours and a national exam. ⚠⚠ And the credential LEVEL is worth a year — an associate or certificate needs three years of work experience where a bachelor's needs two, for the identical exam.

Courses along this path

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.

FIL2000 —Film Appreciation Request a guide
⚠ Film Appreciation — 9 Florida institutions, the most widely carried film course in the state. Lower division, available at state colleges, and the cheapest way to test whether the subject holds you.
FIL2030 —History of Motion Pictures Request a guide
History of Motion Pictures — 4 institutions (Florida State, St Petersburg, UCF, Valencia).
⚠ ⚠⚠ Florida carries the SAME title as FIL1030 at three other institutions with NO overlap — same subject, two levels. Check which your programme wants; a 2000-level course cannot supply upper-division hours toward a baccalaureate.
FIL1030 —History of Motion Pictures Request a guide
History of Motion Pictures — 3 institutions (Broward, Miami Dade, State College of Florida). The lower-division version of the same subject.
⚠ ⚠ No institution carries both this and FIL2030.
FIL2100 —Screenwriting Request a guide
Screenwriting I — 4 institutions. Named because structure is the transferable skill: an editor who understands how a script is built cuts better than one who does not.
FIL2432C —Fiction Filmmaking Request a guide
Fiction Filmmaking — 4 institutions (Broward, Florida SouthWestern, Palm Beach State, Valencia). Production practice at state-college prices.
FIL2461 —Cinematography Request a guide
Cinematography — 3 institutions (State College of Florida, UCF, Valencia). The camera-operator side of the occupation, at $74,990.
FIL1420C —Introduction to Filmmaking Request a guide
Introduction to Filmmaking — 3 institutions (Broward, Hillsborough, Miami Dade). The practical entry course.
⚠ ⚠⚠ FIL1420 without the suffix carries a DIFFERENT title — Digital Production: Non-Fiction — at three other institutions, with no overlap. Here the suffix is separating two subjects rather than lecture from lab, which is unusual and worth checking.
FIL1420 —Digital Production-Non Fiction Request a guide
Digital Production: Non-Fiction — 3 institutions (Eastern Florida, State College of Florida, Valencia). Documentary and non-fiction production, which is where much of the actual paid work is.
⚠ ⚠ Same number as FIL1420C, different title, different institutions.
FIL1000 —Introduction to Film Request a guide
Cinema Survey — 5 institutions including UCF. An alternative lower-division entry where Film Appreciation is not carried.
⚠ ⚠ Florida numbers the introductory survey at least three ways — FIL2000, FIL1000 and FIL2001 Introduction to American Cinema. Register by number.
FIL4036 —Film to the 1940(S) Guide
⚠⚠ Film History 1 — named for a documented divergence rather than for the content alone. The span runs to 1959 statewide, to the 1940s at Florida Atlantic, and has no boundary at UWF because no part 2 exists there.
⚠ ⚠⚠⚠ Roughly two decades — noir, neorealism, the blacklist, the studio break-up, the arrival of television — sit inside the course at one institution and outside it at another. On transfer send a screening or topic list, never the title.
FIL4037 —History of Video Art Request a guide
⚠⚠⚠ Film History 2 statewide and at Florida Atlantic — but USF carries this number as HISTORY OF VIDEO ART, an unrelated subject. A documented one-number-two-subjects case.
⚠ ⚠ So a student cannot simply enrol in the partner number wherever they find it. Read the description, not the number.
DIG2000 —Introduction to Digital Media Request a guide
Introduction to Digital Media — 8 institutions including UCF. The bridge between the film prefix and the wider digital media world where much of the paid editing work now sits.
MUS1360 —Introduction to Music Technology Request a guide
Introduction to Music Technology — 7 Florida institutions. ⚠ Named deliberately: sound is half the finished product and the half most self-taught editors are weakest at, and this is the most widely carried audio-technology course in the state.
⚠ ⚠ It is a MUSIC course rather than a post-production one. Florida has no widely carried film-audio course — check whether your institution runs audio post under DIG, RTV or MUS.
ENT1000 —Introduction to Entrepreneurship Request a guide
⚠ Introduction to Entrepreneurship — 11 institutions. Named because 35% of this occupation is self-employed and no film programme teaches rates, contracts or estimated tax.
⚠ ⚠ Also numbered ENT2000 at 7 other institutions with no overlap.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions. Named because pitching, treatments and grant applications are written work, and editors who can articulate a cut win the argument in the room.

Where you can take these courses in Florida
