Graphic Designer and Animator

50.04 Design and Applied Arts · SOC 27-1024

⚠⚠⚠ This is the first occupation on this site where BLS names ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE as a reason for a projected decline. Graphic design is forecast to shrink 2% from 2025 to 2035: "Automated design tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI), are projected to make graphic designers more productive and reduce the need for these workers." ⚠⚠ $62,960 median, 16,000 openings a year, 20% self-employed — and the animation half pays $102,030 with 63% self-employed.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠⚠ NOTHING HERE IS LICENSED AND THE PORTFOLIO IS THE CREDENTIAL — which in a field BLS expects to shrink makes the portfolio more important, not less. BLS gives the typical entry as a bachelor's degree for both graphic designers and animators, but no state licence, no registry and no professional examination exists. ⚠⚠⚠ THE HONEST POSITION ON AI, STATED RATHER THAN AVOIDED: BLS says automated design tools including AI are projected to make designers more productive and REDUCE THE NEED for them, and on the animation side that some tasks can be completed more quickly with AI, which MAY DAMPEN DEMAND. Those are the federal statistical agency's own words, not a commentator's. ⚠ What they describe is compression of routine production work, not the end of the field — 253,100 people do this job and about 16,000 positions open a year, overwhelmingly through turnover. ⚠⚠ The defensible reading: the work that survives is the work that requires judgement about what to make and why, plus the technical ability to build it. Layout production is the exposed half; art direction, brand strategy, motion, interaction and the ability to ship working digital products are not. ⚠ And note the self-employment: 20% of graphic designers and 63% of animators work for themselves, so for a large minority the real credential is a client list and the real skill is running a business.

⚠⚠⚠ BLS names AI, and this is the first time on this site

BLS on graphic designers: “Automated design tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI), are projected to make graphic designers more productive and reduce the need for these workers.”

BLS on animators: “Some animation and special effects tasks can be completed more quickly with artificial intelligence (AI), which may dampen demand for this occupation.”

⚠⚠⚠ Those are the federal statistical agency's own words. This site has covered occupations where automation was expected and growth continued anyway — medical records specialists are projected to grow 8% despite computer-assisted coding. Design is the first where BLS attributes a projected decline to AI directly.

⚠⚠ Read it precisely, though. A 2% decline over ten years is compression, not collapse: 253,100 people do this job and about 16,000 positions open every year, almost entirely through turnover and retirement. The field is not closing. It is getting harder to enter at the bottom, where the routine production work is.

⚠⚠ $39,070 between the two halves

Animation pays $102,030 against graphic design's $62,960 — but look at the other two columns before drawing a conclusion. 51,900 jobs against 253,100, and 63% self-employed against 20%.

⚠ The animator median largely describes freelancers, and a freelance median is the middle of the people still freelancing. It is a real number and a harder life than the graphic design one, not an easier better-paid version of it.

⚠⚠ And Florida barely teaches it — animation and special effects is 11 institutions and 111 credentials a year.

⚠⚠⚠ Searching for “graphic design” in Florida finds under 5% of it

Digital Arts (50.0102)16723 — UCF alone 507
Web and Multimedia (11.0801)32269
Animation and Special Effects (10.0304)11111

⚠⚠⚠ Around 1,900 credentials a year, and the code actually named “Graphic Design” accounts for 89 of them. A student searching the obvious term finds four institutions and concludes Florida barely teaches this. It teaches it nearly everywhere, under other names.

⚠⚠ UCF alone awards 507 digital arts bachelor's — more than five times the entire graphic design code. If you are looking for the biggest design programme in the state, that is it, and it is not called design.

⚠⚠ And there is a clock-hour route nobody mentions

Florida's technical colleges carry an occupational completion point literally titled Graphic Designer:

CourseHoursTechnical colleges
GRA0024 Production Assistant15011
✅ GRA0026 Graphic Designer30011
GRA0025 Digital Assistant Designer30011
GRA0027 Media Designer30011

⚠ A parallel ladder runs DIG0081 to DIG0084 at 8 technical colleges — Theory and Foundations of Design, Multimedia Digital/Print Designer, Multimedia Web Interactive Designer, Multimedia Integrated Producer Designer — at 150 + 300 + 300 + 300 = 1,050 clock hours.

⚠⚠ The OCP letters on the GRA courses are not consistent with one another, which means more than one state framework uses the prefix. Ask which programme you are enrolling in and which certificate it awards.

✅ In a field with no licence and a portfolio for a credential, a 300-hour certificate plus real work is a serious alternative to four years of tuition — particularly given what BLS says about the direction of demand.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠⚠⚠ Search for the degree under its other names. Digital arts, digital communication and media, web and multimedia, animation. Four institutions carry “graphic design”; around forty carry the field.

⚠⚠ Take the AI projection seriously and specifically. BLS is describing compression of routine production work. Aim above it deliberately — art direction, motion, interaction, or the ability to build what you design — rather than hoping the forecast is wrong.

⚠ Consider the 300-hour certificate before the four-year degree. In a field with no licence, where the portfolio is the credential and the occupation is projected to shrink, the cost-benefit of four years of tuition deserves an honest look. GRA0026 is carried at 11 Florida technical colleges.

⚠⚠ Plan for self-employment whether or not you want it. 20% of graphic designers and 63% of animators work for themselves. Learn pricing and contracts early — Florida teaches short business certificates at 30 institutions and one of them is a better semester than another studio course.

And look hard at instructional design as a destination. It screens on a portfolio exactly as this field does, training and development specialists number 452,300 with 43,900 annual openings, and it is growing much faster than average rather than shrinking.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Graphic and Digital Design 41 Florida schools
The field as it actually exists — 44 Florida public institutions once the codes are counted together, against the 4 that carry the words "graphic design". ⚠⚠ Read its degrees note for the clock-hour route: GRA0026 GRAPHIC DESIGNER is a 300-hour occupational completion point at 11 technical colleges.
Marketing 21 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The commonest employer of design work and the commonest adjacent skill. Design that does not sell anything is a hobby, and the designers who understand the commercial purpose of a brief keep their clients. ⚠ Also the more robust occupation: marketing specialists are growing much faster than average while design is projected to shrink.
Instructional Design and Educational Technology 10 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ The destination this page recommends looking at hardest. It screens on a portfolio exactly as design does, training and development specialists number 452,300 with 43,900 annual openings, and it is growing much faster than average rather than declining 2%. ⚠ EME6209 Digital Video and EME6208 Interactive Media are already taught at Florida universities.
Computer Science 16 Florida schools
⚠⚠ Named because of where BLS says the exposure is. Routine production design is the part AI compresses; building working digital products is not. ⚠ The designers least exposed are the ones who can ship as well as draw, and web and digital interface work carries no equivalent BLS warning.

Related, but not a route in

Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.

Entrepreneurship and Small Business 30 Florida schools
⚠⚠ 20% of graphic designers and 63% of animators are SELF-EMPLOYED. For a large minority this is a business rather than a job, and nothing in a design degree teaches pricing, contracts or quarterly estimated tax. ⚠ Florida teaches short business certificates at 30 institutions, 86% of them under a year.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Film and Video Editor Film/Video and Photographic Arts
⚠⚠⚠ The occupation everyone assumes is most exposed to generative AI is one where the federal handbook makes NO AI claim at all. BLS projects film and video editors and camera operators to grow 3% to 2035 and names robotic cameras, not AI. ⚠⚠ Editors $75,420, camera operators $74,990, 72,000 jobs, 5,600 openings a year — and 35% of them self-employed. ⚠ Miami Dade College alone awards 45% of Florida's film credentials.
Interior Designer Design and Applied Arts
Interior designers plan the inside of buildings — space, light, materials, furniture and the codes that govern all of it. ⚠⚠⚠ The decision this page exists to answer is not which major but WHICH MARKET: in Florida ALL RESIDENTIAL work is exempt from registration by statute, while nonresidential work runs through a 60-credit education floor, up to 5,280 supervised hours and a national exam. ⚠⚠ And the credential LEVEL is worth a year — an associate or certificate needs three years of work experience where a bachelor's needs two, for the identical exam.

GRA0026 —Graphic Designer Request a guide
⚠⚠⚠ Graphic Designer — a 300-clock-hour occupational completion point at 11 Florida technical colleges. The job title is the credential, and it costs a fraction of a degree in a field with no licence.
⚠ ⚠⚠ The OCP letters across GRA0024–GRA0027 are not consistent with one another, which means more than one state framework uses this prefix. Ask which programme you are enrolling in and which certificate it awards.
GRA0024 —Production Assistant Request a guide
Production Assistant — 150 clock hours, 11 technical colleges. The shortest labelled entry point in the family.
GRA0027 —Media Designer Request a guide
Media Designer — 300 clock hours, 11 technical colleges. The exit point aimed at motion and multi-channel work rather than print.
DIG0082 —Multimedia Digital/Print Designer Request a guide
Multimedia Digital/Print Designer — 300 clock hours, 8 technical colleges. Part of the parallel DIG0081–0084 ladder totalling 1,050 hours.
⚠ ⚠ A different framework from the GRA one. The two are not interchangeable — check which your college runs.
DIG2000 —Introduction to Digital Media Request a guide
Introduction to Digital Media — 8 institutions including UCF. ⚠ The college-credit entry point, and the bridge between the clock-hour and degree routes.
GRA2190C —Traditional and Digital Illustration Request a guide
⚠ Traditional and Digital Illustration — 8 institutions (Broward, FAU, FSU, Miami Dade, Northwest Florida, State College of Florida, St Johns River, UNF), the most widely carried college-credit GRA course. Drawing ability is the part of this field AI has least displaced.
GRA2151C —Illustrator Request a guide
Illustrator — 7 institutions. The industry-standard vector tool, taught as a course because employers still list it by name.
GRA3881C —Design: Semiotics Guide
⚠ Comics: Sequential Art and Design — named for a documented catalogue finding rather than for the subject alone. Its statewide title is Semantics of Design and its actual content is semiotics — this site established that the title divergence is presentational, not curricular.
⚠ ⚠⚠ A transfer evaluator comparing "Comics: Sequential Art and Design" against "Semantics of Design" will reasonably conclude they are different subjects and be wrong. Send the syllabus and point at the descriptions.
GRA2508C —Color Theory Guide
Color and Color Theory — a foundation course. ⚠ Named with a caution: its statewide description ends "INSTITUTIONS: FAMU 1988" and FAMU does not carry it today, while UWF does — a documented case of the state record being forty years stale.
⚠ ⚠ The statewide title also carries an administrative marker, (RES 2008), which is not part of the course name.
ART1300C —Drawing I Guide
⚠⚠ Drawing — named deliberately as a warning this project documented: FAU classifies it as Fine Arts (50.0701) and Northwest Florida State as ART TEACHER EDUCATION (13.1302). The same drawing course is filed into two different CIP families.
⚠ ⚠ Take it anyway — drawing is foundational — but do not assume the classification on your transcript means what you expect.
MAR2011 —Principles of Marketing Guide
Principles of Marketing — 24 institutions, all state colleges. ⚠ Named because a designer who understands why a client wants the thing is worth more than one who only makes it, and this is where that is taught cheaply.
⚠ ⚠ A 2000-level course; if a baccalaureate follows, check whether your programme wants MAR3023.
ENT1000 —Introduction to Entrepreneurship Request a guide
⚠ Introduction to Entrepreneurship — 11 institutions. Named because a fifth of graphic designers and nearly two-thirds of animators are self-employed, and nothing in a design curriculum covers pricing, contracts or tax.
⚠ ⚠ Also numbered ENT2000 at 7 other institutions with no overlap.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions. Named because the brief, the proposal and the rationale are written documents, and designers who cannot explain their work lose arguments to people who can.
COP1000 —Introduction to Computer Programming Request a guide
Introduction to Programming — named on the BLS finding. ⚠⚠ The design work least exposed to automated tools is the work that ships as a product, and that means being able to build rather than only specify.
⚠ ⚠ Florida numbers introductory programming several ways (COP1000, COP2000, CGS1540).
