Marketing

Demand, pricing, positioning, research and the selling that follows from them. ⚠⚠ A large, bachelor's-dominated Florida programme: 21 public institutions awarding 2,688 credentials, 2,302 of them bachelor's. ⚠⚠⚠ And it carries the clearest example on this site of Florida's sector numbering split — Principles of Marketing exists as MAR2011 at 24 state colleges and MAR3023 at 19 mostly-university carriers, and a 2000-level course cannot supply upper-division hours toward a baccalaureate.

The degrees this program covers
⚠⚠⚠ READ THIS BEFORE TAKING PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING AT A STATE COLLEGE. Florida numbers the same course twice. MAR2011 is carried by 24 institutions and EVERY ONE is a Florida College System institution; MAR3023 is carried by 19, of which 11 are universities and 8 are the state colleges that hold baccalaureate authority. ⚠⚠ A 2000-level course cannot supply upper-division hours toward a Florida baccalaureate, so a student who takes MAR2011 and transfers into a marketing BBA may be asked to take the same subject again at the 3000 level. ⚠ The eight state colleges carrying BOTH numbers are the proof that this is a deliberate A.S.-to-baccalaureate ladder rather than an error — but it costs a transferring student either way. Get a written answer from the receiving department before you enrol. ⚠⚠ THE DEGREE IS A BACHELOR'S FIELD AND THE MASTER'S IS NOT WHAT PROMOTES YOU. Of 2,688 credentials, 2,302 are bachelor's and only 162 master's. That matches the occupational data: 80% of employers report a bachelor's as the entry requirement for marketing MANAGERS and only 6% a master's — while market research analysts, a more junior and more analytical role, report 30% master's. ⚠ If you want the master's, want it for the analytical specialism, not for the promotion. ⚠ Largest producers: Florida State 574, FIU 507, USF 417, FAU 273, UCF 257, UF 209.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Graphic Designer and Animator
⚠⚠⚠ This is the first occupation on this site where BLS names ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE as a reason for a projected decline. Graphic design is forecast to shrink 2% from 2025 to 2035: "Automated design tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI), are projected to make graphic designers more productive and reduce the need for these workers." ⚠⚠ $62,960 median, 16,000 openings a year, 20% self-employed — and the animation half pays $102,030 with 63% self-employed.
Hospitality, Restaurant and Event Manager
⚠⚠⚠ Lodging managers earn $69,250 and food service managers $69,390 — $140 apart — but 72% of employers want a bachelor's for the first and 30% will take a high school diploma for the second. ⚠⚠ And food service management is SEVEN TIMES the occupation: 352,800 jobs against 52,000, with 42,000 annual openings against 5,400. In the industry Florida is built on, the degree buys you the smaller half at the same money.
Journalist, PR Specialist and Communicator
⚠⚠⚠ Two occupations, one degree family, opposite directions. Journalists: 47,100 jobs, 3,400 openings a year, $62,200, projected to DECLINE 6%. Public relations specialists: 314,500 jobs, 23,000 openings, $74,750, growing. ⚠⚠ PR is nearly SEVEN times the occupation, pays $12,550 more and has nearly seven times the openings — and Florida trains eight communication graduates for every journalism one.
Marketing Manager and Sales Professional
⚠⚠⚠ $166,790, among the highest medians of any bachelor's-entry occupation on this site — beside computer and information systems management at $175,140 and computer hardware engineering at $161,740 — and 80% of employers report a bachelor's rather than a master's. ⚠⚠ The way in is the other half of this page: market research and marketing specialist roles number 941,700 with 87,200 openings a year, and sales representatives 1,571,400 with 123,400.
Small Business Owner and Entrepreneur
⚠⚠⚠ Half of new US businesses are gone in five years and two-thirds in ten — BLS tracks it, and the rate barely moves between cohorts: 79.6% survive year one, 50.2% survive five, 34.7% survive ten. ⚠⚠ Every entrepreneurship page should open with that and almost none does. ⚠ Florida's own answer is a cheap certificate rather than a degree: 86% of the 2,102 credentials in this field are certificates of under a year.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Real Estate Agent, Broker and Analyst
⚠ Named for the sales half. Residential real estate is a customer-acquisition business and the agents who last are the ones who build a pipeline. ⚠⚠ Nothing in the 63-hour pre-licensing course teaches that, which is a large part of why most new licensees leave.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Business Administration and Management 45 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The parent field and the commonest substitute — Census microdata puts BUSINESS first among the undergraduate fields held by marketing managers, at 175,070 people. ⚠ A general business degree with marketing coursework competes perfectly well for the same jobs, and is taught at more Florida institutions.
Communication Sciences and Disorders 7 Florida schools
⚠ Not a route, and named only to prevent a confusion the slug invites: this is speech-language pathology, a clinical field. The COMMUNICATIONS degree that feeds marketing at 88,800 people is a different subject entirely, taught in colleges of communication and journalism.
Data Science and Analytics 13 Florida schools
⚠⚠ Where marketing has actually gone. Market research analysts and marketing specialists number 941,700 with 87,200 annual openings, and the work is increasingly measurement, segmentation and attribution. ⚠ MAR4613 Marketing Research and Information Systems is carried by 13 Florida institutions, and a quantitative background is the clearest way to stand out in a 2,302-bachelor's-a-year field.
Accounting 50 Florida schools
⚠ Named for the sales and management side: pricing, margin and budget responsibility are what separate a marketing manager from a marketing specialist, and the $166,790 median attaches to the job that owns the numbers.
Graphic and Digital Design 41 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The commonest employer of this work and the commonest adjacent skill. Design that does not sell anything is a hobby, and the designers who understand the brief's commercial purpose are the ones who keep clients. ⚠ Marketing is taught at 21 Florida institutions with 2,302 bachelor's a year, far more than any design code.
Journalism, Public Relations and Communication 14 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ The comparison that matters most on money. Marketing managers reach a $166,790 median against public relations specialists' $74,750, and Census microdata puts COMMUNICATIONS second among the undergraduate fields marketing managers hold, at 88,800 people. ⚠ A communication degree reaches the marketing ladder; it is one of the better-paid exits from this family and almost nobody points at it.
Hospitality and Tourism Management 23 Florida schools
⚠ Named because revenue management — pricing rooms and covers by demand — is the highest-leverage skill in this industry and is a marketing discipline. ⚠⚠ HFT2500 Hospitality and Tourism Marketing is carried by 10 Florida institutions, and the people who do it well are the ones who get promoted.
Entrepreneurship and Small Business 30 Florida schools
⚠ Named because customer acquisition is the actual constraint on most new businesses, not the idea. ⚠⚠ MAR2011 Principles of Marketing is carried by 24 Florida institutions, all state colleges — the same places that teach the entrepreneurship certificates, so the two stack cheaply.
Real Estate 8 Florida schools
⚠ Named for the sales half: residential real estate is a customer-acquisition business, and the agents who last are the ones who can build and keep a pipeline. ⚠⚠ Nothing in the 63-hour pre-licensing course teaches that, which is why most new licensees leave.
Web and Interactive Design 34 Florida schools
⚠ Named because a large share of web and interface work is bought by marketing departments, and understanding what a site is for is what separates a designer from a template operator.
