51.10 Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science/Research and Allied Professions
· SOC 29-2011
Medical laboratory scientists produce the results a diagnosis is made from — haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and the blood bank — and catch the result that is wrong before a physician acts on it. ⚠⚠ Florida is one of the few states that LICENSES this work: you may not report a clinical laboratory result here without a licence. ⚠⚠⚠ Read the wage section before you commit: this is a four-year degree paying less than three of the two-year health paths on this site, and that trade-off is the honest centre of this page.
What the work actually is
O*NET, on medical and clinical laboratory technologists: analyze samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction; conduct chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, or spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal or abnormal components; collect and study blood samples to determine the number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, or compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques; set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment; operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers.
⚠ Around seventy per cent of medical decisions rest on laboratory results, and you almost never meet the patient. That is the defining feature of the job and the thing to test yourself against: the satisfaction is in the accuracy and the puzzle, not in the encounter. People who want the science but not the bedside land here and stay for decades; people who wanted the bedside do not.
⚠⚠ The blood bank is the part that will keep you awake. Immunohematology is where a mistake is measured in a transfusion reaction, and it is why the licence exists.
⚠⚠ Projected need — and here the two federal sources DISAGREE
On most paths on this site O*NET and the BLS agree. On this one they do not, and the difference changes the impression.
- O*NET (2024–34 projections): 351,200 employed, growth slower than average (1% to 2%), 22,600 openings a year, median wages $62,930 (2025).
- BLS OOH (2025–35 projections): 343,000 jobs, growth 3%, as fast as average, employment change +9,400, median pay $62,930, typical entry-level education bachelor's degree.
⚠ Quote both, because neither is wrong: they use different projection decades and different growth bands, and the honest summary is that this occupation is growing slowly. The 22,600 annual openings are the number that matters — they come overwhelmingly from replacement rather than growth, and the field has a well-documented staffing shortage. Slow growth and easy hiring are not a contradiction here.
⚠⚠⚠ The trade-off this page exists to state plainly
This is a four-year degree with a median of $62,930. On this site, three health paths reach a higher median on a two-year degree:
| Path | Training | Median (2025) |
|---|
| Dental hygienist | associate | $98,100 |
| Respiratory therapist | associate | $82,280 |
| Radiologic technologist | associate | $80,110 |
| ⚠ Medical laboratory scientist | bachelor's | $62,930 |
⚠⚠ Nobody tells applicants this, and it is not a reason to avoid the field — it is a reason to choose it deliberately. What the laboratory offers instead is work that is intellectually harder, a schedule that is far more predictable, no lifting and no patient handling, and a set of exits the clinical paths do not have: specialisation by discipline, laboratory management, molecular diagnostics, public health laboratories, reference laboratories, and the industry side at diagnostics manufacturers. If the comparison above does not change your mind, that is useful information about yourself.
⚠⚠ The ladder is real, and it starts cheaper than you think
This is one of the few fields on this site where the rungs genuinely connect.
| Rung | Credential | Florida public institutions | Graduates (2023) |
|---|
| Phlebotomy | certificate, usually under 12 weeks | 29 | 772 |
| Medical laboratory technician | associate (MLT) | 9 | 126 |
| Medical laboratory scientist | bachelor's (MLS) | ⚠ 5 | 107 |
⚠⚠⚠ The bridge is written into the state course file. Florida carries a statewide course titled Diagnostic Microbiology for the MLT to MLS Track — the ladder is a designed route, not an improvisation. A phlebotomy certificate gets you working in a hospital laboratory in a few months, at low cost, with a clear view of whether the work suits you; the technician degree follows; the scientist degree bridges from it.
⚠ But note what the table also says: only FIVE Florida public institutions award the bachelor's — UWF, UCF, Santa Fe College, FGCU and USF. That is the smallest programme footprint of any health path on this site. Geography will constrain this decision more than grades will, so find out early which of the five you can realistically attend, and ask each whether the professional year can be done at a hospital near you.
⚠⚠⚠ The suffix trap, and it is the worst one on this site
Everywhere else on this site, a C suffix means an integrated lecture-plus-laboratory course, and a lecture plus its separate laboratory is the same thing packaged differently. At UWF, in this prefix, that is not true, and acting on the general rule would be costly.
| Looks equivalent | What it actually is |
|---|
| MLS 4305 Hematology I (3 sh) + MLS 4305L Lab (1 sh) | the standard route — lecture and a real laboratory |
| MLS 4306C Hematology Professional Track (4 sh) | ⚠⚠ a different route: “students will perform virtual laboratory activities… Permission is required” |
Four credits either way, and they are not interchangeable. UWF runs ten subjects this way — molecular diagnostics, urinalysis, haematology, hemostasis, diagnostic microbiology, medical microbiology, immunology, immunohematology and clinical chemistry I and II — each with a Professional Track twin.
⚠ What the Professional Track is for. Its capstone, MLS 4704 Clinical Management Portfolio Professional Track, asks the student to “provide evidence of adequate training or work experience in Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, and Blood Bank equivalent to an MLS clinical internship” in a portfolio. It is built for someone already working in a laboratory. The hospital rotations exist as separate courses — Clinical Practicum I to IV, taken alongside the track — so a traditional student does them; a working laboratorian can evidence the experience instead.
⚠⚠ So ask one question before you register: does this course, as I will take it, include supervised practice in a hospital laboratory, or am I expected to already have it? The answer is not in the credit value and it is not in the suffix.
⚠ Two more things the numbers hide
The prefix is small and scattered. Florida carries 146 medical laboratory science course numbers across just 7 institutions, and the most widely shared number reaches only 4 of them. The technician prefix is worse — 112 numbers across 17 institutions, best-shared 7. Transfer on syllabi and competency records, not on course numbers, and expect a receiving programme to evaluate you course by course.
⚠⚠ And the prefix does not always mean what it says. At Hillsborough Community College the MLS-prefixed courses are 2000-level and belong to its technician programme, not a bachelor's. At Miami Dade the MLS numbers are a histotechnology curriculum — immunohistochemistry, enzyme histochemistry, in-situ hybridisation — which is a related but different occupation. Check what programme a course belongs to before assuming the prefix places it.
Necessary skills
- Chemistry you can actually use. Two years of general and organic chemistry is not a hurdle placed in front of the degree; it is what clinical chemistry is made of.
- Microscopy and pattern recognition. Differentiating cells and identifying organisms is a trained visual skill, and it is the part that separates people who enjoy the work from people who endure it.
- Quality control as a habit of mind. Knowing that a result is implausible before anyone else does is the actual job.
- Instrument troubleshooting. Modern laboratories are automated, which moves the work from pipetting to diagnosing why the analyser is drifting.
- Composure at three in the morning. Hospitals run laboratories around the clock, and the blood bank calls do not wait for daylight.
Advice
⚠ Start with phlebotomy if you are unsure. Under twelve weeks, available at 29 Florida institutions, and it puts you inside a hospital laboratory where you can watch the job you are considering. Nothing else on this site offers so cheap a look before a four-year commitment.
⚠⚠ Check NAACLS accreditation before anything else, because the technologist licence route runs through an approved clinical laboratory training programme. Ask each of the five bachelor's programmes where its clinical affiliations are — the professional year is spent in a hospital, and which hospital may decide whether the degree is practical for you.
⚠ Decide the MLT question deliberately. Two years to a technician licence and a job, then bridging to the bachelor's while employed, is a genuinely good route in this field and often an employer-supported one. It is slower on paper and lower-risk in practice.
And plan the certification alongside the degree, not after it. The ASCP Board of Certification examination is what most Florida licence routes name, and programmes know their own pass rates. Ask for the number.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it
covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that
awarded a credential in the field in 2023;
it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different
from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do
not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification
(HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND RELATED PROGRAMS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in.
⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and
expensive late.
Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on.
A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own
institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
BSC2010
—General Biology I
Guide
General Biology I — 20 institutions. The majors-track biology the whole degree assumes, and the first course a bachelor's programme will look at.
⚠ ⚠ This is the MAJORS sequence, not the non-majors BSC1005 or the health-professions BSC2085 anatomy course. A programme that requires BSC2010 will not accept those in its place.
BSC2010L
—Biology I Laboratory
Guide
General Biology I Laboratory — 18 institutions, the corequisite half.
CHM2045
—General Chemistry I
Guide
General Chemistry I — 16 institutions. The start of a two-year chemistry sequence that clinical chemistry is built directly on top of.
⚠ ⚠ Not CHM1020 or CHM1025 — those are the survey courses for health programmes that need one term. This degree needs the majors sequence, and starting on the wrong one costs a year.
CHM2045L
—General Chemistry I Lab
Guide
General Chemistry I Laboratory — 16 institutions, the corequisite half.
CHM2046
—General Chemistry II
Guide
General Chemistry II — 17 institutions. Equilibria, kinetics and acid-base, which is where the analytical reasoning in a clinical chemistry laboratory comes from.
⚠ ⚠ Usually paired with CHM2046L (16 institutions).
CHM2210
—Organic Chemistry I
Guide
Organic Chemistry I — 29 institutions, the most widely carried course in this list. UWF names it explicitly in the prerequisite chain for its clinical practicum sequence.
⚠ ⚠ Some programmes accept a one-term survey (BCH2023 or CHM2200) instead; UWF's practicum chain names CHM2210 AND CHM2210L specifically. Check your target programme before substituting.
CHM2210L
—Organic Chemistry I Lab
Guide
Organic Chemistry I Laboratory — 26 institutions, and named alongside the lecture in the practicum prerequisite chain.
MCB2010
—Microbiology
Guide
Microbiology — 16 institutions. The lower-division entry to what becomes a whole discipline of the degree, and the usual prerequisite for the MLT programmes.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Two different courses share this subject at two levels: MCB2010 is the lower-division version at 16 institutions, MCB3020 the upper-division one at 8. UWF's clinical practicum chain names MCB3020 and MCB3020L. They are NOT interchangeable for a bachelor's requirement — check which your programme names.
MCB3020
—Microbiology
Guide
Microbiology, upper division — 8 institutions. This is the one UWF's clinical practicum sequence actually requires, alongside its laboratory.
⚠ ⚠ Carried by only 8 public institutions, all of them universities plus Broward and St Petersburg. If you are completing lower-division work at a college that carries only MCB2010, ask the receiving programme in writing whether it will substitute.
Genetics — 16 institutions. Named in UWF's prerequisite chain as an alternative to its own clinical genetics course, and the foundation for the molecular diagnostics half of the field.
⚠ ⚠ UWF accepts PCB3063 OR its own MLS3194 Clinical Genetics. Molecular diagnostics is the fastest-growing part of this occupation, so treat this as core rather than optional.
STA2023
—Elementary Statistics
Guide
Elementary Statistics — 39 institutions. Quality control, method validation and reference intervals are statistics applied to instruments, and this is where that starts.
MLT1022C
—Introduction to Medical Laboratory Technology
Request a guide
Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science — 6 institutions, the most widely carried entry course in the technician programme. Safety, specimen handling, basic instrumentation and what the departments actually do.
⚠ ⚠⚠ The technician prefix is heavily fragmented: 112 numbers across 17 institutions, with the best-shared number reaching only 7. Expect your college's sequence to use different numbers from any other college's, and transfer on syllabi rather than numbers.
Hematology Principles — 5 institutions. Blood cell production, maturation and morphology, and the automated counts that most of a laboratory's workload passes through.
⚠ ⚠ Carried as Hematology I and Hematology II (MLT1302C) at several colleges, and the same subject appears in the bachelor's prefix as MLS4305, MLS4308, MLS3305 and MLS4306 depending on the institution.
MLT1401C
—Medical Microbiology
Request a guide
Microbiology, Parasitology and Mycology — 5 institutions. Identifying the organism and determining what will kill it, which is the part of the laboratory with the most direct effect on a prescription.
MLT1500C
—Immunology and Serology
Request a guide
Immunology and Serology — 6 institutions. Antigen-antibody methods and the serologic diagnosis of infection and autoimmune disease.
MLT2807L
—Clinical Practicum II - Blood Banking
Request a guide
Blood Bank Practicum — 6 institutions. Supervised practice in immunohematology, which is the highest-consequence bench in the building.
⚠ ⚠⚠ A clinical course: hours are spent in a hospital laboratory on its schedule, commonly including evening and night shifts because that is when laboratories run. Expect background screening, immunisations, drug screening and health insurance to be complete BEFORE the rotation.
MLS4550
—Clinical Immunohematology
Guide
Immunohematology — 4 institutions, the most widely carried number in the bachelor's prefix. Blood groups, compatibility testing, antibody identification and transfusion reactions.
⚠ ⚠⚠ At UWF the same subject also exists as MLS4552C Immunohematology Professional Track, which uses virtual laboratory activities and requires permission. Four credits either way — they are different routes, not different packagings. Read this page's suffix warning before choosing.
MLS4505
—Clinical Immunology
Guide
Clinical Immunology — 3 institutions. Complement, antibodies, immune-mediated disease and the serologic methods used to diagnose it.
⚠ ⚠ Also carried as MLS4506C Clinical Immunology Professional Track at UWF and as MLS4506 at Miami Dade; UCF calls its version Immunodiagnostics.
MLS4625
—Advanced Clinical Chemistry I
Guide
Clinical Chemistry — 3 institutions. Analytes, methods and instrumentation, and the largest single volume of testing in most hospital laboratories.
⚠ ⚠ Numbered as MLS4625, MLS4627, MLS4630 and MLS4621 across the five bachelor's programmes, usually as a two-course sequence with a laboratory. ⚠⚠ The statewide file gives MLS4625L the same title as its lecture, so the state record cannot distinguish the halves — go to the institution's catalogue.
MLS4460
—Diagnostic Microbiology
Guide
Diagnostic Microbiology — 2 institutions. The upper-division clinical microbiology course, taken as part of the professional year.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Carried as MLS4460, MLS4460C, MLS4461C, MLS4430C, MLS4404 and MLS4462 across the five programmes — six numbers for what is broadly one subject. ⚠ At UWF MLS4461C is the Professional Track version; at Santa Fe MLS4460C is a five-credit Clinical Pathogenic Microbiology course. The suffix does not tell you which.
MLS4191
—Molecular Diagnostics
Guide
Molecular Diagnostics — 3 institutions. PCR, sequencing and the methods that are moving fastest in this occupation, and the clearest specialisation route out of routine bench work.
⚠ ⚠ Also at UWF as MLS4193C Molecular Diagnostics Professional Track, and at Miami Dade as MLS4193.
MLS3705
—Concepts in Education/Management
Request a guide
Clinical Laboratory Management — 2 institutions. Operations, finance, regulation and information systems: the course that leads to supervisor and director licence categories rather than to another bench.
⚠ ⚠ Florida licenses SUPERVISOR and DIRECTOR as separate categories, so management coursework is not a detour from the licence — it is the next category of it.
MLS4306C
—Hematology Professional Track
Guide
Hematology Professional Track — 1 institution. Listed deliberately, because it is the clearest example of the trap this page warns about: a four-credit course that looks like the combined form of MLS4305 plus MLS4305L and is a different route entirely.
⚠ ⚠⚠⚠ UWF's description: students perform VIRTUAL laboratory activities, and permission is required. It is one of ten Professional Track subjects whose capstone (MLS4704) asks for evidence of work experience equivalent to a clinical internship. ⚠ The hospital rotations exist separately as Clinical Practicum I to IV. Ask whether the version you are registering for includes supervised hospital practice or assumes you already have it.
MLS4820L
—Clinical Chemistry Internship
Guide
Clinical Chemistry Internship — 2 institutions. Santa Fe's model for the professional year: the rotation split into one internship per discipline, each in an affiliated hospital laboratory.
⚠ ⚠ The five bachelor's programmes structure the professional year completely differently — Santa Fe as six discipline internships (MLS4820L to MLS4825L), UWF as four Clinical Practicum courses, USF as six-credit clinical blocks, FGCU as C-suffix practicums. ⚠⚠ Compare the clinical hours and where they are served, not the course numbers.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is
how many of the 24 listed courses each one carries — it shows where
the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a
degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
Requirements change. These are the authorities that decide them — check them directly before
committing to a route.
