51.08 Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services · SOC 31-2011
Occupational therapy assistants deliver the treatment that gets people back to doing ordinary things — dressing, cooking, writing, working, playing — after injury, stroke, developmental delay or mental illness. ⚠ A median of $72,300 on a two-year degree, growing 21%. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding worth acting on: it pays MORE and grows FASTER than the physical therapist assistant, and Florida trains a QUARTER as many. Four institutions, 57 graduates a year. This page covers the assistant, the aide and the therapist.
| Role | SOC | 2025 median | Jobs | Outlook 2025–35 | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Occupational therapy aide | 31-2012 | ⚠ $39,160 | 4,400 | ⚠ 4% | high school, unregulated |
| Occupational therapy assistant | 31-2011 | $72,300 | 52,200 | ✅✅ 21% | accredited associate + licence |
| Occupational therapist | 29-1122 | the professional tier | — | — | ⚠ master's or doctorate |
⚠⚠⚠ $33,140 and seventeen percentage points of growth separate the aide from the assistant, and the thing in between is a two-year accredited degree and a licence. The aide role is not a stepping stone in any formal sense — it is a different, unregulated job — but it is a legitimate way to see the work before committing.
✅ 21% growth on 52,200 jobs, with about 8,600 openings a year across assistants and aides, is one of the strongest outlooks on this site.
This site already carries the physical therapist assistant path. Put the two side by side and the result is counter-intuitive.

⚠⚠ The better-paid, faster-growing credential is the one Florida trains a quarter as many people for. That is not a market signal about quality — it is a supply fact, and it works in the graduate's favour. The catch is geography: with four programmes in the state — Daytona State, FSCJ, Polk State and State College of Florida–Manatee-Sarasota — where you live may simply decide this.
⚠ So the honest advice is: if either appeals and you can reach an occupational therapy assistant programme, look hard at it before defaulting to the physical therapist assistant just because it is nearer.
O*NET, on occupational therapy assistants: instruct, or assist in instructing, patients and families in home programs, basic living skills; monitor patients' performance in therapy activities, providing encouragement; observe and record patients' progress, attitudes, and behavior and maintain this information in client records.
⚠⚠ The distinction students get wrong: physical therapy works on MOVEMENT, occupational therapy works on FUNCTION. A physical therapist assistant might work on restoring shoulder range of motion; an occupational therapy assistant works on whether the person can now get dressed, and if not, what adaptation or technique makes it possible. That takes the profession into places physical therapy does not go — paediatric developmental work, mental health, cognitive rehabilitation, hand therapy, home and workplace adaptation, and assistive technology.
⚠ It is also less uniformly physical. Transfers and lifting are still part of it, but a larger share of the caseload is fine motor, cognitive and behavioural — which suits a different person than the sports-and-orthopaedics image of rehabilitation.
If the therapist role is the eventual goal, occupational therapy is currently the shorter route. Florida's 4 professional programmes produced 62 master's degrees and 47 professional doctorates — FIU 47 master's, UF 47 doctorates, FAMU 15 master's. Physical therapy, by contrast, is 100% doctoral in Florida: all 350 credentials are the DPT.
⚠⚠⚠ But the same warning applies as on the physical therapy path: the assistant associate degree is NOT advanced standing toward the therapist qualification. An assistant who wants to become an occupational therapist completes a bachelor's and then applies to a master's or doctoral programme in open competition. Choose the level deliberately rather than treating the assistant degree as a first instalment.
Florida requires 24 weeks of supervised fieldwork for the assistant licence. That is close to half a year of full-time placement, on the facility's schedule and often not near your home.
⚠⚠ Ask each of the four programmes where its fieldwork placements are and how they are allocated, because with so few programmes the sites are spread widely, and this is the part of the course that cannot be fitted around a job. Expect background screening, immunisations and current CPR to be complete before it starts.
⚠⚠ Check all four Florida programmes, not just the nearest. With 57 graduates a year statewide, geography is the binding constraint, and it is worth knowing whether any of Daytona State, FSCJ, Polk State or State College of Florida is reachable before settling for a different career.
⚠ Verify ACOTE accreditation directly. Florida's licence requires graduation from an accredited programme and the NBCOT examination requires it too — so the accreditation is what makes the whole route work.
⚠ Do not assume the assistant degree leads on to the therapist qualification. It does not, in the same way the physical therapist assistant degree does not. If the therapist role is the goal, look at whether going straight for a bachelor's and then the master's is the better plan — and note that occupational therapy still has a master's route where physical therapy no longer does.
And spend time in a paediatric setting and a skilled nursing facility before choosing. They are both occupational therapy and they are barely the same work — one is children's development and play, the other is helping frail adults keep their independence — and most applicants have only pictured one of them.
There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND RELATED PROGRAMS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 11 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
