Physical Therapist Assistant

51.08 Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services · SOC 31-2021

Physical therapist assistants deliver the treatment a physical therapist has planned — guiding exercise, applying manual therapy and modalities, measuring what has changed, and keeping a discouraged patient working through the months that recovery actually takes. ⚠ A median of $68,380 on a two-year associate degree, with federal growth projected at 17% over 2025–35. ⚠⚠ Check which wage figure you are reading: the federal page covers assistants AND aides together, and an aide earns half as much and needs no degree. ⚠⚠⚠ Florida licenses this work under Chapter 486, and there are two examinations.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠⚠ Florida licensure (s. 486.102, F.S.) needs a CAPTE-accredited associate degree and TWO examinations, and people routinely budget for only one. FIRST, the degree must come from a programme accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) — the accreditation is what makes you eligible, not the credit. SECOND, the National Physical Therapy Examination for the PTA, taken through the FSBPT at $485. THIRD, a separate Florida Laws and Rules Examination, also through the FSBPT, at $65. The state application and licensing fee is $180, and electronic fingerprinting is required following HB 975. ⚠ Renewal is 24 contact hours every two years — 22 general, 2 on prevention of medical errors, and 1 on HIV/AIDS at first renewal — with no more than 12 hours by home study. ⚠⚠ One provision worth knowing before you graduate: Florida issues a TEMPORARY PERMIT to a United States–trained graduate, valid for six months from graduation, requiring proof of medical malpractice insurance and direct supervision by a licensed physical therapist. It means you can start work while the examination and licence are pending — ask your programme how its graduates use it.

What the work actually is

O*NET, on physical therapist assistants: instruct, motivate, safeguard, and assist patients as they practice exercises or functional activities; document patient information, such as notes on their progress; observe patients during treatments to compile and evaluate data on their responses; administer active or passive manual therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, aquatic physical therapy; transport patients to and from treatment areas, lifting and transferring them.

⚠ The therapist evaluates and writes the plan; the assistant delivers it. That division is set by statute rather than by custom, and it shapes the job: you spend far more time with each patient than the therapist does, over weeks or months, and you are the person who notices that something has changed.

⚠⚠ It is physical work. Transferring and lifting patients is in the task list for a reason, and so is the emotional side — a great deal of the skill is keeping someone working at something difficult and slow when they can no longer see it helping.

⚠⚠⚠ Read the wage figure carefully — the federal page covers two different jobs

The BLS publishes assistants and aides on one page, and the headline number is the blend of both. They are not the same job.

combined figure the page leads with$61,200——

⚠ If you search for this career you will meet the $61,200 or the $35,240 first, and both will mislead you. The number attached to the credential this page describes is $68,380. An aide sets up equipment and cleans it; an assistant treats patients.

Projected need — and both sources agree it is fast

✅ They agree, and 17% is at the top of the range of anything on this site. ⚠⚠ Note the openings figure against the employment figure — 19,800 a year against 111,500 assistants is close to one opening per six people employed, every year. That is a field with real hiring, and it is the practical reason the credential is worth having.

⚠⚠ Physics is in the prerequisites, and people are caught by it

Most Florida PTA programmes require anatomy and physiology with laboratories, psychology, and a physics course — Indian River State College's 74-credit A.S. names PHY 1020 Principles of Physics or higher alongside both halves of anatomy and physiology.

⚠ That surprises applicants who chose a health programme expecting to avoid it, and it is not decoration: levers, force, torque and friction are what therapeutic exercise and manual therapy are made of, and the biomechanics course assumes them. Take it seriously and take it early — it is the prerequisite most likely to delay an application by a term.

⚠⚠ Everything requires a grade of C or higher, and admission is limited-access at every Florida programme, so the prerequisite grades are the application.

⚠⚠ Two different suffix patterns live in this prefix, and the difference matters

This prefix is an unusually clean illustration of a distinction that costs students credit elsewhere on this site. Both shapes are present, and the diagnostic is who carries what.

PairCarriersWhat it means
PHT 1200 + PHT 1200L
Basic Patient Care
✅ the same 7 institutions carry botha genuine lecture-plus-laboratory pair — enrol in both halves in the same term
PHT 2810 vs PHT 2810L
Clinical Practice II
⚠ 6 institutions vs 11, no overlap at allone course filed two ways by different colleges — same content, different identifier
PHT 2820 vs PHT 2820L⚠ 6 vs 9, no overlapthe same, on the next clinical course
PHT 2162 vs PHT 2162C
Neurological conditions
⚠ 6 vs 6, no overlapthe same, on the neurology course

⚠⚠⚠ An evaluator matching on the identifier sees a mismatch on three of these four where there is none. The rule to carry away: if the same college carries both forms it is a packaging split and you take both; if different colleges carry different forms, it is one course with two filings.

⚠ The numbers do not travel, so plan for that

Florida carries 171 lower-division physical therapy course numbers across 21 institutions, and the most widely shared real course — Clinical Practice II — reaches only 11 of the 21. Programmes name the same subjects differently: Principles of Practice at one college, Basic Patient Care at another, Therapeutic Modalities at a third.

⚠⚠ So do not plan to assemble the programme from courses at several colleges. These are cohort programmes taken as a designed sequence; what transfers between colleges is the general education and the science prerequisites, not the professional courses. Take the prerequisites anywhere convenient and the programme in one place.

⚠ The assistant degree is not a step toward being a therapist

Florida has 17 public institutions awarding the assistant associate degree and 7 awarding the Doctor of Physical Therapy — and the state produces more therapists (350 a year) than assistants (267).

⚠⚠⚠ The associate degree does not shorten the doctorate. A PTA who decides to become a PT completes a bachelor's degree and then applies to a DPT programme in open competition. That is a seven-year route rather than a continuation, and it is the single most common misunderstanding about this career. If being the therapist is the goal, look hard at going straight for the bachelor's-then-DPT route now.

⚠ What the assistant credential does offer is two years to a licensed clinical job with real hiring, in a field where much of the day-to-day patient contact belongs to you rather than to the therapist. That is a good job on its own terms — just choose it as a destination rather than as a waypoint.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠ Check CAPTE accreditation first, at capteonline.org. It is what makes you eligible to sit the national examination, and no other statement on a college's page substitutes for it.

⚠⚠ Budget for both examinations and the fees. The NPTE is $485, the Florida Laws and Rules examination is $65, and the state application is $180 — roughly $730 after a two-year degree, and programmes do not always say so up front.

⚠ Ask about the temporary permit. Six months from graduation, with malpractice insurance and direct supervision, is enough to be earning while the licence is processed. Programmes whose graduates use it routinely will tell you how.

And spend a day in an outpatient clinic and a day in a skilled nursing facility before you choose. They are both PTA jobs and they are barely the same work — one is athletes and post-surgical knees, the other is frail older people and slow, arduous gains. Most students have only pictured the first.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Physical Therapy 24 Florida schools
The programme itself, at both levels — 17 Florida public institutions for the assistant associate degree and 7 for the doctorate. ⚠ Read its degrees note before assuming the two connect: the associate is not advanced standing toward the DPT, and Florida produces more therapists than assistants.

Related, but not a route in

Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.

Radiologic Technology 23 Florida schools
⚠ Not a route here — separate credentials, neither transfers. Named because it is the other two-year limited-access programme at the same colleges and the comparison is close: radiography pays more at entry ($80,110 against $68,380) and is procedural and scheduled, where this work is longitudinal and physical.
Nursing 78 Florida schools
⚠ Not a route here. Named because it is at 78 Florida institutions against 17, so for many students it is the programme that actually exists nearby — and because people who want sustained contact with the same patients over months often find this work suits them better than shift-based nursing does.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND RELATED PROGRAMS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Athletic Trainer Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
⚠⚠⚠ A master's-entry, state-licensed clinical profession paying $62,520 — less than a licensed practical nurse earns on a certificate ($64,400), and less than every associate-degree clinical route on this site except paramedic. ⚠⚠ The profession moved to master's entry in 2022: CAATE states that after the fall 2022 term, baccalaureate degree programmes will no longer enrol students. ⚠ Florida's statute has not caught up and still reads as though a bachelor's is enough.
Dental Hygienist Dental Support Services and Allied Professions
Dental hygienists are licensed clinicians who assess and treat the gums, remove calculus and stains, take and read radiographs, apply preventive agents, and teach patients to look after their own teeth. ⚠ A median of $98,100 on a two-year associate degree — the highest of any two-year route on this site. ⚠⚠ Florida licenses the work under Chapter 466 and requires THREE separate examinations on top of the degree. ⚠⚠⚠ Admission is the hard part, not the coursework: 18 public programmes in the whole state, all limited-access.
Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
Sonographers produce and interpret the ultrasound images physicians diagnose from — deciding in real time which views answer the clinical question, and recognising the difference between healthy and pathological tissue on a screen nobody else is watching. ⚠ A median of $96,590 on a two-year degree, second only to dental hygiene among the two-year routes on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ And a regulatory fact worth knowing before you enrol: Florida does NOT license sonographers, because the statute is written about radiation rather than about imaging.
Health Care Administrator Health and Medical Administrative Services
Running the non-clinical half of health care — budgets, staffing, quality, compliance, revenue, regulators. $123,860 median, 616,200 employed, 62,100 openings a year, growing much faster than average. ⚠⚠ There is no required major: Census microdata puts HEALTH first at 169,319 people, BUSINESS second at 75,396 and PSYCHOLOGY third at 47,154. ⚠⚠⚠ But Florida statute puts a price on the choice — on the nursing home side, a health administration major halves the required training programme from 2,000 hours to 1,000.
Health Information Technician, Coder and Medical Office Administrator Health and Medical Administrative Services
⚠⚠⚠ Three different routes wear this name in Florida, they are taught at roughly the same number of institutions, and only ONE of them leads to the field's professional credential. Health information management — 31 institutions, and the associate degree is what makes you RHIT-eligible. Billing and coding — 37 institutions and the largest output, all clock-hour certificates, none of which does. Medical office administration — 36 institutions into an occupation of 850,000 people with no credential ladder at all. ⚠⚠ Choosing wrongly does not waste a term; it forecloses the credential.
Licensed Practical Nurse Practical Nursing, Vocational Nursing and Nursing Assistants
LPNs give direct nursing care under an RN or physician — medications, wounds, vital signs, assessment — and supervise aides. ⚠ It is the widest-taught credential on this site (48 Florida institutions, 1,322 completions a year), a median of $64,400, and the one field where Florida law publishes each programme's licence-examination pass rate before you enrol. Look it up.
Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services
Two of the largest short-certificate routes into health care in Florida, paying within $60 a year of each other and taught at the same technical colleges — and the state treats them completely differently. ⚠⚠⚠ Florida writes down in statute exactly what a medical assistant may do, including venipuncture and administering medication, and requires NO licence, certificate or training to do it. It requires a pharmacy technician, working behind a counter, to register with the Board of Pharmacy and complete a board-approved programme. ⚠⚠ And the medical assisting programme has FOUR labelled exit points you can leave on and be hired at — the pharmacy technician programme has none.
Medical Laboratory Scientist Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science/Research and Allied Professions
Medical laboratory scientists produce the results a diagnosis is made from — haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and the blood bank — and catch the result that is wrong before a physician acts on it. ⚠⚠ Florida is one of the few states that LICENSES this work: you may not report a clinical laboratory result here without a licence. ⚠⚠⚠ Read the wage section before you commit: this is a four-year degree paying less than three of the two-year health paths on this site, and that trade-off is the honest centre of this page.
Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Practice Nurse Registered Nursing, Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing
⚠⚠⚠ Florida grants nurse practitioners autonomous practice — and almost every account of it omits the limit that matters. Autonomous registration covers PRIMARY CARE ONLY. It does not let you practise your specialty without a physician protocol, and only certified midwives are excepted. 11,201 APRNs were registered for autonomous practice as of the 2024 legislative analysis. ⚠⚠ The occupation itself is nearly twice the size of the physician assistant profession — 320,400 employed, 29,500 openings a year, $132,300 median.
Occupational Therapy Assistant Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services
Occupational therapy assistants deliver the treatment that gets people back to doing ordinary things — dressing, cooking, writing, working, playing — after injury, stroke, developmental delay or mental illness. ⚠ A median of $72,300 on a two-year degree, growing 21%. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding worth acting on: it pays MORE and grows FASTER than the physical therapist assistant, and Florida trains a QUARTER as many. Four institutions, 57 graduates a year. This page covers the assistant, the aide and the therapist.
Paramedic Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
Paramedics are the highest level of prehospital care — assessing and stabilising at the scene, administering drugs, managing advanced airways, reading ECGs and running a cardiac arrest before the patient reaches a hospital. ⚠ Median $60,600, reached through a certificate rather than a degree, and stacked on top of a short EMT course most people complete first. ⚠⚠ In Florida this is substantially a FIRE SERVICE credential: departments pay for it and pay extra for holding it. ⚠⚠⚠ And the accreditation rule here is the strictest on this site — the wrong programme leaves you unable to certify at all.
Pharmacist Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Administration
⚠⚠ One route: the Doctor of Pharmacy, awarded in Florida's public system by UF, FAMU and USF (about 412 a year). ⚠⚠ Admission turns on two or more years of prerequisite science, not a bachelor's degree: UF's minimum is an associate degree, and more than half of Pharm.D. applications nationally come from people without a bachelor's. Median pay is $140,910 nationally and $135,970 in Florida. BLS expects retail demand to be limited as prescriptions move online and by mail.

Courses along this path

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.

BSC2085 —Anatomy and Physiology I Guide
Anatomy and Physiology I — 20 institutions. Required by Florida PTA programmes with a grade of C or higher, and the course admission is largely decided on.
⚠ ⚠ Two equivalent packagings: 20 institutions split it into BSC2085 plus BSC2085L, and 7 carry the combined BSC2085C. Register for whichever your catalogue lists, and where it is split take BOTH halves in the same term.
BSC2085L —Anatomy and Physiology I Laboratory Guide
Anatomy and Physiology I Laboratory — 19 institutions, the corequisite half.
BSC2086 —Anatomy & Physiology II Guide
Anatomy and Physiology II — 19 institutions. The second half, required alongside the first by every Florida PTA programme checked.
⚠ ⚠ Also carried as the combined BSC2086C at 7 institutions.
BSC2086L —Anatomy and Physiology II Lab Guide
Anatomy and Physiology II Laboratory — 19 institutions.
PHY1020 —Fundamentals of Physics Request a guide
Principles of Physics — 21 institutions. ⚠ The prerequisite applicants do not expect in a health programme, and it is required: Indian River names PHY1020 or higher. Levers, force and torque are what therapeutic exercise is built on.
⚠ ⚠⚠ 'Or higher' matters if you may later go on to a bachelor's and a DPT — PHY2053 General Physics I (19 institutions) satisfies the PTA requirement AND counts toward a science degree, where the survey course often does not. ⚠ Check whether your programme wants the laboratory too.
PSY2012 —General Psychology Guide
Introduction to Psychology — 33 institutions. Required outright rather than as an option at Indian River, because adherence, motivation and pain behaviour are half of whether a plan of care works.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions, in the general-education core of every Florida PTA associate degree.
MAC1105 —College Algebra Request a guide
College Algebra — 36 institutions. One of the mathematics options, and the one to take if a bachelor's degree is a possibility later.
⚠ ⚠ Programmes usually allow a choice: Indian River accepts College Algebra or higher, Mathematical Thinking, Elementary Statistics or Calculus I. Check your own college's list.
PHT1000 —Introduction to Physical Therapy Request a guide
Introduction to Physical Therapy — 6 institutions. The profession, the scope of practice, the legal division between therapist and assistant, and the settings the work happens in.
⚠ ⚠ Several colleges instead open with PHT1200 Basic Patient Care (7 institutions) or a course called Principles of Practice I. The prefix names the same subjects differently at nearly every college.
PHT1200 —Introduction to Physical Therapy Request a guide
Basic Patient Care — 7 institutions. Transfers, positioning, vital signs, body mechanics and safety: the skills used on the first day of the first clinical placement.
⚠ ✅ A genuine lecture-plus-laboratory pair — the SAME 7 institutions carry PHT1200 and PHT1200L, so take both halves together. ⚠ Contrast this with the clinical courses on this page, where different colleges carry different suffixes for one course.
PHT1200L —Basic Patient Care Lab Request a guide
Basic Patient Care Laboratory — 7 institutions, the hands-on half where the transfers are actually practised on each other.
PHT1121 —Functional Anatomy and Kinesiology Request a guide
Functional Anatomy and Kinesiology — 3 institutions under this number. How joints and muscles produce movement, and the course the physics prerequisite exists to support.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Carried under this number at only 3 colleges but taught at all of them under names such as Kinesiology, Applied Anatomy or Functional Anatomy. This is the course to compare when checking whether a programme's sequence matches another's.
PHT1300 —Pathology for the Physical Therapist Assistant Guide
Medical Surgical Conditions — 5 institutions. The pathology behind the referrals: what was repaired, what is healing, and what the treatment must not do yet.
PHT1213 —Foundations of Therapeutic Exercise Request a guide
Foundations of Therapeutic Exercise — 3 institutions under this number. Prescribing and progressing exercise, which is the core intervention of the whole profession.
⚠ ⚠ Also carried as PHT2220C Therapeutic Exercise in P.T. (4 institutions) and PHT2228C Therapeutic Exercise II (4). Three numbers, one subject, different colleges.
PHT2210 —Principles of Practice III Request a guide
Therapeutic Modalities — the agents applied alongside exercise: heat, cold, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and traction, with the evidence for each.
⚠ ⚠ Titled Principles of Practice III at Indian River and Therapeutic Modalities elsewhere. ⚠⚠ Expect the evidence base for several modalities to be contested — a good programme teaches which ones current guidelines still support.
PHT2162 —Neurological Disabilities & Treatment Request a guide
Survey of Neurological Deficiencies — 6 institutions. Stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson's and brain injury: the caseload in rehabilitation hospitals and much of skilled nursing.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Carried as PHT2162 at 6 colleges and PHT2162C at 6 others, with NO college carrying both — one course, two filings. ⚠ Also taught as PHT2255 Neuromuscular PT at colleges using a different sequence.
PHT2289 —Cardiopulmonary & Systemic Physical Therapy Request a guide
Cardiopulmonary and Systemic Physical Therapy — the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation side, plus the systemic conditions that change what a patient can tolerate.
PHT1801L —Clinical Practice I Request a guide
Clinical Practice I — 6 institutions. The first supervised placement, usually short, where the laboratory skills meet a real caseload.
⚠ ⚠⚠ A clinical course: full-time hours in a clinic on its schedule, not the college's. Expect Level 2 background screening, immunisations, TB and drug screening, health insurance and current CPR to be complete BEFORE the placement, and expect to travel to it.
PHT2810L —Physical Therapy Clinical Practice II Request a guide
Clinical Practice II — 11 institutions, the most widely carried real course in the prefix. A full-time placement at which you are treating a caseload under supervision.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Filed as PHT2810 without the L at 6 other colleges, and the carrier sets do NOT overlap — one course, two identifiers. An evaluator matching on the number sees a difference that is not there.
PHT2820L —Physical Therapy Clinical Practice III Request a guide
Clinical Practice III — 9 institutions, the terminal placement. Its competency record is what a first employer asks about and what the examination assumes you have done.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Filed as PHT2820 without the L at 6 other colleges, again with no overlap. ⚠ Keep the clinical performance instrument and the hour log; the transcript line will not describe what you did.
