51.12 Medicine · SOC 29-1210

⚠⚠⚠ There is no pre-medical major, and AAMC's own numbers say the medical-sounding one is the worst choice. Of 54,699 applicants in 2025-26, 58.6% majored in biological sciences and were admitted at 42.1% against an overall 42.9% — while mathematics and statistics reached 57.3%, humanities 52.0% and physical sciences 51.3%. ⚠⚠ Specialized health sciences came LAST at 40.3%. Six Florida public medical schools award 757 degrees a year.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠⚠ FLORIDA CHANGED THE ROUTE IN 2024, AND IT IS THE BIGGEST LICENSURE CHANGE ON THIS SITE. CS/SB 7016, signed 21 March 2024 as chapter 2024-15, EXEMPTS qualifying internationally trained physicians from the United States residency requirement. Under s. 458.311(8)(e) an applicant may be certified without an approved residency if they hold an active unencumbered licence to practise medicine in a foreign country, have actively practised medicine during the ENTIRE FOUR-YEAR PERIOD preceding the application, completed a residency or substantially similar postgraduate training recognised in their licensing jurisdiction, hold an active valid ECFMG certificate, and ⚠⚠ have AN OFFER FOR FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT as a physician from a health care provider operating in Florida. An applicant who does not qualify for unrestricted licensure may be certified on a restricted basis instead, and must notify the Board of Medicine of any change of employment. ⚠ The same act repealed the old s. 458.3124 restricted-licence provision, enacted the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact in Florida, and created the TEACH Funding Program for clinical training. ⚠⚠⚠ Read what that means about the supply problem: faced with a physician shortage, Florida's answer was partly to admit doctors who trained somewhere else, tied to a job offer — not only to build more pipeline. ⚠ For a domestically trained applicant nothing changed: an accredited medical school, USMLE or COMLEX, and a residency, which remains the real bottleneck.

⚠⚠⚠ The major does not matter, and the one that sounds like it does is last

⚠⚠⚠ Biological sciences is 58.6% of the entire applicant pool and is admitted at below the overall rate. Specialized health sciences — the most medicine-sounding category in the table — is last on both rate and MCAT.

⚠⚠ Now the caution, because it changes what you may conclude

These are selection effects, not causes. Mathematics and statistics is 335 people, self-selected and unusual. Nobody becomes a better candidate by switching major.

⚠⚠⚠ And look at the matriculant column, which is where the real point is: the scores CONVERGE. Admitted students average 511.9 from biological sciences, 513.0 from humanities, 515.8 from mathematics, 512.1 overall. The bar is the same everywhere. What differs is who clears it.

⚠ So the honest claim is narrow, and it is the same one this site's Lawyer path reached from LSAC data: the evidence gives no support to choosing a major BECAUSE its title sounds like the profession. Study what you are good at, clear the prerequisite coursework, and take the MCAT seriously.

⚠⚠⚠ Florida's 2024 answer to its physician shortage: import doctors

CS/SB 7016, signed on 21 March 2024, exempts qualifying internationally trained physicians from the US residency requirement. Under s. 458.311(8)(e) the applicant must:

⚠⚠⚠ That last condition is the whole design: the licence follows the job. The same act repealed the older restricted-licence provision, enacted the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact and created the TEACH Funding Program for clinical training.

⚠ For a Florida student nothing changed — medical school, USMLE or COMLEX, residency. But it tells you something worth knowing before committing twelve years: the state's fastest lever on its own shortage was not more medical school seats.

⚠⚠ Primary care is growing through nurse practitioners, not physicians

Role2025 medianEmployedOpenings/yrGrowth 2024–34

Physician assistant$135,880162,70012,000✅ much faster (7%+)

⚠⚠⚠ Nine times as many nurse practitioner openings a year as family medicine physician openings. Family medicine pays roughly $110,000 more and is growing at average rates while both advanced-practice routes grow much faster. That is the structure of American primary care, and it should be part of a decision that costs twelve years.

⚠⚠ The anaesthesia comparison, which surprises almost everyone

⚠ These are the PUBLIC schools. This site does not list private or osteopathic institutions, and Florida has several, so 757 is the public-tuition output rather than the state's total.

✅ The prerequisites are cheap and local — with one exception

Every standard prerequisite is carried widely across Florida's public colleges: composition and calculus at 39 institutions, statistics at 39, psychology at 33, organic chemistry I and II at 29 each, sociology at 29, calculus-based physics at 25, general biology at 20, general chemistry at 15.

⚠⚠⚠ The exception is BCH3023 Biochemistry: SEVEN carriers, and upper division. It is the one prerequisite likely to force a transfer or an online course, and it is also tested on the MCAT. Plan for it in your first year, not your third.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠⚠⚠ Major in something you will get high grades in and enjoy. The prerequisites are courses, not a degree, and the data says the biology-by-default choice performs slightly below average. This is the most useful and most ignored advice on this page.

⚠⚠ Find biochemistry early. Seven Florida public institutions carry it and it is upper division. Everything else you can take at a state college near home.

⚠ Look honestly at PA and nurse practitioner before committing. Not because medicine is not worth it, but because the primary-care numbers above are what the job market is actually doing, and the training differential is eight years.

⚠ Treat residency as the real bottleneck — medical school admission is the famous hurdle and the match is the one that decides your specialty, your income and where you live.

And read s. 458.311(8)(e) if you trained abroad. Florida will license you without a US residency if you have four unbroken years of practice, ECFMG certification and a Florida job offer. That is a genuinely unusual provision and it took effect in March 2024.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Medicine 6 Florida schools
The MD programme — 6 Florida public institutions, 757 credentials, 749 professional doctorates. USF 179, UF 149, FSU 125, UCF 122, FIU 118, FAU 64. ⚠ Read its degrees note for the AAMC acceptance-rate table and the biochemistry problem.
Physician Assistant Studies 6 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The comparison worth making on structure rather than prestige: two to three years against four plus a three-to-seven-year residency, and a PA can change specialty without retraining. ⚠ Six Florida public programmes each — the same count, very different lengths, and the PA route needs ~3,200 patient care hours before applying where medicine does not.
Advanced Practice Nursing 9 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ Named for the anaesthesia comparison: 53,800 nurse anesthetists against 45,300 anesthesiologists, and 2,700 annual openings against 1,300. ⚠ The nursing occupation is larger than the physician one beside it, at $236,590 against $391,490 — and it is reached through an RN licence and a doctorate rather than medical school and a four-year residency.
Public Health 14 Florida schools
⚠ The MD/MPH is a common pairing and public health is where much physician policy, epidemiology and population work happens. 8 Florida institutions, all universities, 579 master's a year.

Related, but not a route in

Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.

Medical Laboratory Science 14 Florida schools
⚠ An honest alternative rather than a route: the same chemistry and biology prerequisites, a licensed Florida profession, $82,280 on a bachelor's, and four years instead of twelve. ⚠⚠ Named because a student who loves the science but not the decade should see it before committing.
Health Care Administration 24 Florida schools
⚠ Not a route in, but the commonest route out of full-time clinical practice — physician executives sit inside the medical and health services manager occupation. Named so a twelve-year plan is made with its exits visible.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND RELATED PROGRAMS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Athletic Trainer Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
⚠⚠⚠ A master's-entry, state-licensed clinical profession paying $62,520 — less than a licensed practical nurse earns on a certificate ($64,400), and less than every associate-degree clinical route on this site except paramedic. ⚠⚠ The profession moved to master's entry in 2022: CAATE states that after the fall 2022 term, baccalaureate degree programmes will no longer enrol students. ⚠ Florida's statute has not caught up and still reads as though a bachelor's is enough.
Dental Hygienist Dental Support Services and Allied Professions
Dental hygienists are licensed clinicians who assess and treat the gums, remove calculus and stains, take and read radiographs, apply preventive agents, and teach patients to look after their own teeth. ⚠ A median of $98,100 on a two-year associate degree — the highest of any two-year route on this site. ⚠⚠ Florida licenses the work under Chapter 466 and requires THREE separate examinations on top of the degree. ⚠⚠⚠ Admission is the hard part, not the coursework: 18 public programmes in the whole state, all limited-access.
Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
Sonographers produce and interpret the ultrasound images physicians diagnose from — deciding in real time which views answer the clinical question, and recognising the difference between healthy and pathological tissue on a screen nobody else is watching. ⚠ A median of $96,590 on a two-year degree, second only to dental hygiene among the two-year routes on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ And a regulatory fact worth knowing before you enrol: Florida does NOT license sonographers, because the statute is written about radiation rather than about imaging.
Health Care Administrator Health and Medical Administrative Services
Running the non-clinical half of health care — budgets, staffing, quality, compliance, revenue, regulators. $123,860 median, 616,200 employed, 62,100 openings a year, growing much faster than average. ⚠⚠ There is no required major: Census microdata puts HEALTH first at 169,319 people, BUSINESS second at 75,396 and PSYCHOLOGY third at 47,154. ⚠⚠⚠ But Florida statute puts a price on the choice — on the nursing home side, a health administration major halves the required training programme from 2,000 hours to 1,000.
Health Information Technician, Coder and Medical Office Administrator Health and Medical Administrative Services
⚠⚠⚠ Three different routes wear this name in Florida, they are taught at roughly the same number of institutions, and only ONE of them leads to the field's professional credential. Health information management — 31 institutions, and the associate degree is what makes you RHIT-eligible. Billing and coding — 37 institutions and the largest output, all clock-hour certificates, none of which does. Medical office administration — 36 institutions into an occupation of 850,000 people with no credential ladder at all. ⚠⚠ Choosing wrongly does not waste a term; it forecloses the credential.
Licensed Practical Nurse Practical Nursing, Vocational Nursing and Nursing Assistants
LPNs give direct nursing care under an RN or physician — medications, wounds, vital signs, assessment — and supervise aides. ⚠ It is the widest-taught credential on this site (48 Florida institutions, 1,322 completions a year), a median of $64,400, and the one field where Florida law publishes each programme's licence-examination pass rate before you enrol. Look it up.
Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services
Two of the largest short-certificate routes into health care in Florida, paying within $60 a year of each other and taught at the same technical colleges — and the state treats them completely differently. ⚠⚠⚠ Florida writes down in statute exactly what a medical assistant may do, including venipuncture and administering medication, and requires NO licence, certificate or training to do it. It requires a pharmacy technician, working behind a counter, to register with the Board of Pharmacy and complete a board-approved programme. ⚠⚠ And the medical assisting programme has FOUR labelled exit points you can leave on and be hired at — the pharmacy technician programme has none.
Medical Laboratory Scientist Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science/Research and Allied Professions
Medical laboratory scientists produce the results a diagnosis is made from — haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and the blood bank — and catch the result that is wrong before a physician acts on it. ⚠⚠ Florida is one of the few states that LICENSES this work: you may not report a clinical laboratory result here without a licence. ⚠⚠⚠ Read the wage section before you commit: this is a four-year degree paying less than three of the two-year health paths on this site, and that trade-off is the honest centre of this page.
Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Practice Nurse Registered Nursing, Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing
⚠⚠⚠ Florida grants nurse practitioners autonomous practice — and almost every account of it omits the limit that matters. Autonomous registration covers PRIMARY CARE ONLY. It does not let you practise your specialty without a physician protocol, and only certified midwives are excepted. 11,201 APRNs were registered for autonomous practice as of the 2024 legislative analysis. ⚠⚠ The occupation itself is nearly twice the size of the physician assistant profession — 320,400 employed, 29,500 openings a year, $132,300 median.
Occupational Therapy Assistant Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services
Occupational therapy assistants deliver the treatment that gets people back to doing ordinary things — dressing, cooking, writing, working, playing — after injury, stroke, developmental delay or mental illness. ⚠ A median of $72,300 on a two-year degree, growing 21%. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding worth acting on: it pays MORE and grows FASTER than the physical therapist assistant, and Florida trains a QUARTER as many. Four institutions, 57 graduates a year. This page covers the assistant, the aide and the therapist.
Paramedic Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
Paramedics are the highest level of prehospital care — assessing and stabilising at the scene, administering drugs, managing advanced airways, reading ECGs and running a cardiac arrest before the patient reaches a hospital. ⚠ Median $60,600, reached through a certificate rather than a degree, and stacked on top of a short EMT course most people complete first. ⚠⚠ In Florida this is substantially a FIRE SERVICE credential: departments pay for it and pay extra for holding it. ⚠⚠⚠ And the accreditation rule here is the strictest on this site — the wrong programme leaves you unable to certify at all.
Pharmacist Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Administration
⚠⚠ One route: the Doctor of Pharmacy, awarded in Florida's public system by UF, FAMU and USF (about 412 a year). ⚠⚠ Admission turns on two or more years of prerequisite science, not a bachelor's degree: UF's minimum is an associate degree, and more than half of Pharm.D. applications nationally come from people without a bachelor's. Median pay is $140,910 nationally and $135,970 in Florida. BLS expects retail demand to be limited as prescriptions move online and by mail.

Courses along this path

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.

BSC2010 —General Biology I Guide
General Biology I — 20 institutions. The majors-level sequence every medical school prerequisite list names, and the foundation for the MCAT's biological sciences section.
⚠ ⚠ Not interchangeable with BSC2085 Anatomy and Physiology. Medical schools want the majors biology sequence; the A&P sequence is the nursing and allied-health one.
BSC2011 —General Biology II Guide
General Biology II — 18 institutions. The second half, usually ecology, evolution and organismal biology.
CHM1045 —General Chemistry I Request a guide
General Chemistry I — 15 institutions. Universally required and the gate to organic chemistry.
CHM1046 —General Chemistry II Request a guide
General Chemistry II — 15 institutions. Required everywhere, and a common place where pre-medical plans quietly end.
CHM2210 —Organic Chemistry I Guide
Organic Chemistry I — 29 institutions. Required by essentially every medical school and heavily represented on the MCAT.
CHM2211 —Organic Chemistry II Guide
Organic Chemistry II — 29 institutions. The second half; some schools accept biochemistry in its place, most do not.
BCH3023 —Introductory Biochemistry Request a guide
⚠⚠⚠ Biochemistry — only SEVEN Florida public institutions carry it, and it is upper division. It is a near-universal prerequisite and a major MCAT topic, which makes it the single hardest prerequisite to obtain locally.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Plan for this in your first year. With seven carriers it is the prerequisite most likely to force a transfer, a summer elsewhere or an online course — and doing it late leaves you unprepared for the MCAT as well as short a requirement.
PHY2048 —General Physics with Calculus I Guide
Physics with Calculus I — 25 institutions. Required by most medical schools, and the calculus-based version is the safer choice if you might apply to engineering-adjacent or research programmes too.
⚠ ⚠ Florida also carries algebra-based PHY2053 at 19 institutions and PHY2054 at 18. Most medical schools accept either; check, because a few do not.
MAC2311 —Calculus I Guide
Calculus I — 39 institutions, tied for the most widely carried course in the state. Required or strongly preferred by most medical schools, and a prerequisite for calculus-based physics.
STA2023 —Elementary Statistics Guide
Elementary Statistics — 39 institutions. Increasingly required outright, and you will read clinical trial evidence for forty years.
PSY2012 —General Psychology Guide
⚠ Introduction to Psychology — 33 institutions. Not optional any more: the MCAT's psychological, social and biological foundations of behavior section is a quarter of the examination.
SYG2000 —Introduction to Sociology Guide
⚠ General Sociology — 29 institutions. The other half of that MCAT section, and the one pre-medical students most often skip and then regret.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions. Universally required, and the personal statement and secondary essays are a real part of the application.
ENC1102 —English Composition II Guide
English Composition II — 37 institutions. The second composition requirement most medical schools name explicitly.
HUN2201 —Fundamentals of Human Nutrition Guide
Human Nutrition — 13 institutions. Not required, named because it is the cheapest useful preparation for the chronic-disease management that dominates actual practice.
MCB2010 —Microbiology Guide
Microbiology — 16 institutions. Not universally required but widely recommended, and directly useful for the infectious disease content of both the MCAT and the first two years.
