Registered Dietitian Nutritionist

51.31 Dietetics and Clinical Nutrition Services · SOC 29-1031

Dietitians assess nutritional status and design the medical nutrition therapy that treats kidney disease, diabetes, cancer, critical illness and failure to thrive. ⚠ A median of $76,400 with 8% growth. ⚠⚠⚠ And the thing a Florida student must not get wrong: since 1 January 2024 the national credential requires a GRADUATE DEGREE, while the Florida licensing statute still says a bachelor's — three sources disagree about what this career needs, and this page sets out which one binds.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠⚠⚠ Three standards apply here and they do not agree. ONE, the NATIONAL CREDENTIAL: since 1 January 2024 the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a minimum of a GRADUATE DEGREE to establish eligibility for the registration examination for dietitians. Anyone who established eligibility on or before 31 December 2023, or who is already registered, is not affected. The graduate degree may be in ANY field from an accredited institution, but the ACEND-accredited coursework and a supervised practice component of at least 1,000 hours — most programmes run about 1,200 — remain separate requirements. TWO, the FLORIDA LICENCE: s. 468.509 still requires only a baccalaureate or postbaccalaureate degree with a major in human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics or food management, plus a preprofessional experience component of not less than 900 hours, plus a state examination — from which registered dietitians are exempt. THREE, the BLS still lists typical entry-level education as a bachelor's degree. ⚠⚠ Reconcile them this way: the Florida licence is what makes practice lawful, the RDN is what makes you employable, and the RDN now needs the master's. ⚠ O*NET's respondents already reflect the new reality — 53% name a post-baccalaureate certificate and 33% a master's, against only 10% naming a bachelor's.

What the work actually is

O*NET, on dietitians and nutritionists: assess nutritional needs, diet restrictions, and current health plans to develop and implement dietary-care plans; counsel individuals and groups on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring; manage quantity food service departments or clinical and community nutrition services; plan, conduct, and evaluate dietary, nutritional, and epidemiological research.

⚠ The clinical half is not about healthy eating. Medical nutrition therapy for a dialysis patient, a burns patient or someone on parenteral feeding is prescription-level work with narrow tolerances, and it is why the credential exists. The third task on that list — running food service for a hospital or a school district — is a management job that a large share of dietitians actually do.

The numbers, and they are good

✅ Both are positive and the BLS is the more optimistic — 8% against O*NET's 5–6% band, on different decades. A $76,400 median is solid for a health profession outside the licensed-therapy group, and the work is largely weekday and outpatient or hospital-based.

⚠⚠⚠ The 2024 credential change, and why three sources disagree

This is the most consequential thing on the page and it is recent enough that much of the advice online predates it.

SourceWhat it says you needStatus

Florida statute s. 468.509a baccalaureate or postbaccalaureate degree, 900 hours, state examinationcurrent state law
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbooktypical entry-level education: bachelor's degree⚠ lagging the change

⚠⚠ They are all accurate about different things, and the practical answer is the strictest one. Florida's licence is what makes practice lawful; the RDN is what employers hire, what the statute itself treats as exempting you from the state examination, and what now requires a master's. Plan for the graduate degree.

⚠ One piece of genuinely good news inside the rule: the graduate degree does not have to be in nutrition. Any accredited master's or doctorate satisfies it — business, public health, psychology, exercise science. What cannot be substituted is the ACEND-accredited coursework and the supervised practice hours, which are assessed separately. So a student who already holds an unrelated master's is closer to this career than they think.

⚠⚠ Florida's funnel is three institutions wide

Only four Florida public institutions award the dietetics bachelor's — FIU 76, UNF 52, UF 33 — and only three award the master's the credential now requires: FIU 41, UNF 28, FSU 12. About 81 graduate credentials a year for the entire state.

⚠⚠⚠ Set that against the 167 bachelor's degrees a year and the shape of the problem is obvious: the 2024 change turned a reasonably open undergraduate pipeline into a narrow graduate bottleneck at three universities. Geography will constrain this decision more than your grades will, and the supervised practice placement — the dietetic internship — has historically been the competitive step even before the master's requirement.

⚠ So ask every programme two questions in writing: is your graduate programme ACEND-accredited, and is the supervised practice built in or do I apply for it separately? A coordinated programme that includes the internship removes the single biggest point of failure in this career.

⚠ The dietetic technician is a different job, not a smaller version

Florida also awards a dietetic technician certificate — Lindsey Hopkins Technical College, about 24 a year. It is a real job (DTR) working under a dietitian's supervision, and it is not a step toward the RDN. The registration route runs through the ACEND didactic programme and a graduate degree; technician hours do not substitute for either.

⚠ It is still worth knowing about as a way into a clinical nutrition department while studying, in the same way phlebotomy works for laboratory science.

✅ What travels, and the prefix that does not

The prerequisites travel well: CHM 2210 Organic Chemistry I at 29 institutions, BSC 2085 and BSC 2086 Anatomy and Physiology at 20 and 19, MCB 2010 Microbiology at 16, STA 2023 and PSY 2012 at 39 and 33. HUN 1201 Nutrition reaches 21 institutions and HUN 2201 Science of Human Nutrition 13.

⚠⚠ The professional prefix does not travel at all, because it barely exists. DIE 3213 Nutrition Therapy is carried by ONE institution and DIE 4125 by two. That is not fragmentation in the usual sense — it is simply how few places teach this. Take the sciences at a state college with confidence and expect the professional sequence to happen in one place.

⚠ Watch which nutrition course you take. HUN 1201 is the general-education nutrition course that health programmes across this site require; HUN 2201 Science of Human Nutrition is the majors version, carried by the universities. They are not interchangeable for a dietetics degree requirement.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠⚠ Plan for the master's from the first year. The 2024 rule is not being phased in — it is in force, and a bachelor's alone no longer reaches the examination. Anyone advising you otherwise is working from pre-2024 information, including some of the federal material.

⚠ Target a coordinated programme if you can. The supervised practice placement is the historic bottleneck in this profession; a programme that includes it removes that risk entirely.

⚠ If you already hold a master's in something else, look again. The graduate requirement is field-agnostic. You may need only the ACEND coursework and the supervised practice, which is a far shorter route than starting over.

And take the chemistry seriously and early. Organic chemistry is the course that ends dietetics ambitions, it is carried at 29 Florida institutions so you can take it anywhere, and doing it well is the cheapest way to keep this career available.

Where people come from

There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.

51.22Public Health
⚠ Public health — a genuine adjacent destination for the community and population half of nutrition, and one that does not carry the RDN's graduate-degree and internship gate. 15 Florida public institutions against 6 here.
31.05Sports, Kinesiology, and Physical Education/Fitness
Kinesiology and exercise science — 16 Florida public institutions. Sports nutrition sits across the two, and an exercise science degree plus the ACEND coursework is one of the field-agnostic graduate routes the 2024 rule allows.
26.01Biology, General
Biological sciences — 15 Florida public institutions and the largest science footprint in the state. Named because the metabolism and biochemistry that dietetics rests on are taught here, and because a biology degree plus ACEND coursework is a viable route.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Dietetics and Nutrition 6 Florida schools
The programme itself — and read its degrees note before choosing an institution, because the 2024 graduate-degree rule narrowed Florida's route to three universities awarding about 81 master's credentials a year.

Related, but not a route in

Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.

Nursing 78 Florida schools
⚠ Not a route here, but the comparison most health-science students are actually making, and it is stark on access: 78 Florida institutions against 6, and licensure from an associate degree against a required master's. ⚠⚠ Named so the reader sees the trade honestly — dietetics is a longer, narrower and more academic route to a similar hospital.
Medical Laboratory Science 14 Florida schools
⚠ Not a route. Named because it is the other small, science-heavy clinical programme with a narrow Florida footprint and a long credential chain — and because it reaches its credential from a bachelor's, which is now the practical difference between them.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND RELATED PROGRAMS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Athletic Trainer Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
⚠⚠⚠ A master's-entry, state-licensed clinical profession paying $62,520 — less than a licensed practical nurse earns on a certificate ($64,400), and less than every associate-degree clinical route on this site except paramedic. ⚠⚠ The profession moved to master's entry in 2022: CAATE states that after the fall 2022 term, baccalaureate degree programmes will no longer enrol students. ⚠ Florida's statute has not caught up and still reads as though a bachelor's is enough.
Dental Hygienist Dental Support Services and Allied Professions
Dental hygienists are licensed clinicians who assess and treat the gums, remove calculus and stains, take and read radiographs, apply preventive agents, and teach patients to look after their own teeth. ⚠ A median of $98,100 on a two-year associate degree — the highest of any two-year route on this site. ⚠⚠ Florida licenses the work under Chapter 466 and requires THREE separate examinations on top of the degree. ⚠⚠⚠ Admission is the hard part, not the coursework: 18 public programmes in the whole state, all limited-access.
Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
Sonographers produce and interpret the ultrasound images physicians diagnose from — deciding in real time which views answer the clinical question, and recognising the difference between healthy and pathological tissue on a screen nobody else is watching. ⚠ A median of $96,590 on a two-year degree, second only to dental hygiene among the two-year routes on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ And a regulatory fact worth knowing before you enrol: Florida does NOT license sonographers, because the statute is written about radiation rather than about imaging.
Health Care Administrator Health and Medical Administrative Services
Running the non-clinical half of health care — budgets, staffing, quality, compliance, revenue, regulators. $123,860 median, 616,200 employed, 62,100 openings a year, growing much faster than average. ⚠⚠ There is no required major: Census microdata puts HEALTH first at 169,319 people, BUSINESS second at 75,396 and PSYCHOLOGY third at 47,154. ⚠⚠⚠ But Florida statute puts a price on the choice — on the nursing home side, a health administration major halves the required training programme from 2,000 hours to 1,000.
Health Information Technician, Coder and Medical Office Administrator Health and Medical Administrative Services
⚠⚠⚠ Three different routes wear this name in Florida, they are taught at roughly the same number of institutions, and only ONE of them leads to the field's professional credential. Health information management — 31 institutions, and the associate degree is what makes you RHIT-eligible. Billing and coding — 37 institutions and the largest output, all clock-hour certificates, none of which does. Medical office administration — 36 institutions into an occupation of 850,000 people with no credential ladder at all. ⚠⚠ Choosing wrongly does not waste a term; it forecloses the credential.
Licensed Practical Nurse Practical Nursing, Vocational Nursing and Nursing Assistants
LPNs give direct nursing care under an RN or physician — medications, wounds, vital signs, assessment — and supervise aides. ⚠ It is the widest-taught credential on this site (48 Florida institutions, 1,322 completions a year), a median of $64,400, and the one field where Florida law publishes each programme's licence-examination pass rate before you enrol. Look it up.
Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services
Two of the largest short-certificate routes into health care in Florida, paying within $60 a year of each other and taught at the same technical colleges — and the state treats them completely differently. ⚠⚠⚠ Florida writes down in statute exactly what a medical assistant may do, including venipuncture and administering medication, and requires NO licence, certificate or training to do it. It requires a pharmacy technician, working behind a counter, to register with the Board of Pharmacy and complete a board-approved programme. ⚠⚠ And the medical assisting programme has FOUR labelled exit points you can leave on and be hired at — the pharmacy technician programme has none.
Medical Laboratory Scientist Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science/Research and Allied Professions
Medical laboratory scientists produce the results a diagnosis is made from — haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and the blood bank — and catch the result that is wrong before a physician acts on it. ⚠⚠ Florida is one of the few states that LICENSES this work: you may not report a clinical laboratory result here without a licence. ⚠⚠⚠ Read the wage section before you commit: this is a four-year degree paying less than three of the two-year health paths on this site, and that trade-off is the honest centre of this page.
Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Practice Nurse Registered Nursing, Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing
⚠⚠⚠ Florida grants nurse practitioners autonomous practice — and almost every account of it omits the limit that matters. Autonomous registration covers PRIMARY CARE ONLY. It does not let you practise your specialty without a physician protocol, and only certified midwives are excepted. 11,201 APRNs were registered for autonomous practice as of the 2024 legislative analysis. ⚠⚠ The occupation itself is nearly twice the size of the physician assistant profession — 320,400 employed, 29,500 openings a year, $132,300 median.
Occupational Therapy Assistant Allied Health and Medical Assisting Services
Occupational therapy assistants deliver the treatment that gets people back to doing ordinary things — dressing, cooking, writing, working, playing — after injury, stroke, developmental delay or mental illness. ⚠ A median of $72,300 on a two-year degree, growing 21%. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding worth acting on: it pays MORE and grows FASTER than the physical therapist assistant, and Florida trains a QUARTER as many. Four institutions, 57 graduates a year. This page covers the assistant, the aide and the therapist.
Paramedic Allied Health Diagnostic, Intervention, and Treatment Professions
Paramedics are the highest level of prehospital care — assessing and stabilising at the scene, administering drugs, managing advanced airways, reading ECGs and running a cardiac arrest before the patient reaches a hospital. ⚠ Median $60,600, reached through a certificate rather than a degree, and stacked on top of a short EMT course most people complete first. ⚠⚠ In Florida this is substantially a FIRE SERVICE credential: departments pay for it and pay extra for holding it. ⚠⚠⚠ And the accreditation rule here is the strictest on this site — the wrong programme leaves you unable to certify at all.
Pharmacist Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Administration
⚠⚠ One route: the Doctor of Pharmacy, awarded in Florida's public system by UF, FAMU and USF (about 412 a year). ⚠⚠ Admission turns on two or more years of prerequisite science, not a bachelor's degree: UF's minimum is an associate degree, and more than half of Pharm.D. applications nationally come from people without a bachelor's. Median pay is $140,910 nationally and $135,970 in Florida. BLS expects retail demand to be limited as prescriptions move online and by mail.

Courses along this path

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.

HUN2201 —Fundamentals of Human Nutrition Guide
Science of Human Nutrition — 13 institutions. ⚠ The MAJORS nutrition course, carried by the universities, and the one a dietetics degree requires.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Not interchangeable with HUN1201 Nutrition (21 institutions), which is the general-education course other health programmes on this site require. Taking the wrong one is a common and avoidable delay.
HUN1201 —Human Nutrition Guide
Nutrition — 21 institutions. The general-education course, widely carried and useful — but check before assuming it satisfies a dietetics requirement.
⚠ ⚠ Listed so the distinction from HUN2201 is visible from both sides.
CHM2210 —Organic Chemistry I Guide
Organic Chemistry I — 29 institutions. ⚠⚠ The course that filters this major. Metabolism is organic chemistry applied to people, and biochemistry assumes it.
⚠ ✅ Carried at 29 Florida public institutions, so it can be taken almost anywhere. ⚠ Usually paired with CHM2210L (26 institutions), and preceded by general chemistry CHM2045/2046.
BSC2085 —Anatomy and Physiology I Guide
Anatomy and Physiology I — 20 institutions. The structural and functional basis for clinical assessment.
⚠ ⚠ Two equivalent packagings: BSC2085 plus BSC2085L at 20 institutions, the combined BSC2085C at 7.
BSC2086 —Anatomy & Physiology II Guide
Anatomy and Physiology II — 19 institutions. Digestive, renal and endocrine systems, which is most of what medical nutrition therapy acts on.
MCB2010 —Microbiology Guide
Microbiology — 16 institutions. Foodborne illness and food safety, and the infection context of clinical nutrition.
FOS2201 —Food Service Sanitation Management Request a guide
Food Safety and Sanitation — 8 institutions. HACCP and food service safety, aimed at the management half of the profession that students routinely underestimate.
⚠ ⚠ Often the course that carries a ServSafe or equivalent certification, which is directly employable.
HUN3403 —Life Span Nutrition Request a guide
Life Span Nutrition — 5 institutions. Requirements from pregnancy through infancy, childhood, adulthood and old age, which is the framework most clinical practice is organised around.
DIE3213 —Nutrition Therapy I Request a guide
Nutrition Therapy — ⚠ ONE institution. Medical nutrition therapy proper: the disease-by-disease clinical content the credential exists for.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Carried by a single Florida public institution, which is not fragmentation but scarcity — only four award this degree at all. ⚠ Expect the professional sequence to happen entirely at one institution, and plan the transfer around the sciences instead.
DIE4125 —Management of Food & Nutrition Services II Request a guide
Management of Food and Nutrition Services — 2 institutions. Budgets, staffing and operations for hospital and institutional food service, which employs a large share of dietitians.
STA2023 —Elementary Statistics Guide
Elementary Statistics — 39 institutions. Nutrition is a field saturated with weak evidence, and the professional's value is being able to tell which studies mean anything.
PSY2012 —General Psychology Guide
Introduction to Psychology — 33 institutions. Behaviour change is the mechanism by which nutrition advice works or fails, and counselling is half the job.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions. Chart notes, care plans and patient education materials are the written output, and the patient education has to be readable by the patient.
